These works were the Estoire del Saint Grail, the Estoire de Merlin, the Lancelot propre ( or Prose Lancelot, which made up half the entire Vulgate Cycle on its own ), the Queste del Saint Graal and the Mort Artu, which combine to form the first coherent version of the entire Arthurian legend.

This statement was likely picked up by the author of the Estoire Merlin, or Vulgate Merlin, where the author ( who was fond of fanciful folk etymologies ) asserts that Escalibor " is a Hebrew name which means in French ' cuts iron, steel, and wood '" (" c ' est non Ebrieu qui dist en franchois trenche fer & achier et fust "; note that the word for " steel " here, achier, also means " blade " or " sword " and comes from medieval Latin aciarium, a derivative of acies " sharp ", so there is no direct connection with Latin chalybs in this etymology ).

As such, Arthur became even more of a relatively minor character in these French prose romances ; in the Vulgate itself he only figures significantly in the Estoire de Merlin and the Mort Artu.

Lancelot's character is perhaps most fully developed in Vulgate Cycle, where he appears prominently in the third and fourth parts, known as the Prose Lancelot ( or Lancelot du lac ) and the Queste del Saint Graal ( or The Quest for the Holy Grail ) respectively.

This story cycle recounts multiple quests, in multiple variants, telling stories both of the heroes who succeed, like Percival ( in Wolfram von Eschenbach's Parzival ) or Sir Galahad ( in the Queste del Saint Graal ), and also the heroes who fail, like Sir Lancelot.

It is also found in the 12th century Quete del St. Graal, attributed to Walter Map, who probably actually only edited it.

In the 13th Century, a medieval romance, the Prose Tristan, inserted another prose romance the Vulgate Queste del Saint Graal in its entirety in order to reinterpret the Quest for the Holy Grail through the optics of the Tristan story.

The romances themselves were not entirely believed, but such tales as Valentine and Orson, Guillaume de Palerme, and Queste del Saint Graal were only the beginning of the fantasy genre, not fully removed from belief.

Manessier wrapped up many of the loose ends from the previous authors, and includes several episodes from other works, including the " Joie de la Cour " adventure from Chrétien's Erec and Enide and Calogrenant's death as told in the Queste del Saint Graal section of the Lancelot-Grail cycle.
