In 1890, White married Helen Magill, the daughter of Swarthmore College's second president, Edward Magill.

Helen Magill White ( November 28, 1853, Providence, Rhode Island – October 28, 1944, Kittery Point, Maine ) was the first woman to earn a Ph. D. in the United States.

In 1859, the family moved to Boston, where Helen signed up as the only female student in the Boston Public Latin School, where her father, Edward Hicks Magill, taught French and Latin for three years, then became submaster.

Helen Magill met Andrew D. White, the retired president of Cornell University, while presenting a paper at the American Social Science Association in 1887, and married him in September 1890.
