In 1980 Jeff Lynne was asked to write for the soundtrack of the musical film Xanadu, with the other half written by John Farrar and performed by the film's star Olivia Newton-John.

According to Coleridge's Preface to Kubla Khan, the poem was composed one night after he experienced an opium influenced dream after reading a work describing Xanadu, the summer palace of the Mongol ruler and Emperor of China Kublai Khan.

The text about Xanadu in Purchas, His Pilgrimage, which Coleridge admitted he did not remember exactly, was: " In Xandu did Cublai Can build a stately Pallace, encompassing sixteen miles of plaine ground with a wall, wherein are fertile Meddowes, pleasant Springs, delightfull streames, and all sorts of beasts of chase and game, and in the middest thereof a sumptuous house of pleasure, which may be moved from place to place.

This quotation was based upon the writings of the Venetian explorer Marco Polo who is widely believed to have visited Xanadu in about 1275.

In the 1970s Ted Nelson's original " Xanadu " hypertext repository was envisioned as such a service.

The term " hyperlink " was coined in 1965 ( or possibly 1964 ) by Ted Nelson at the start of Project Xanadu.

Though Nelson's Xanadu Corporation was eventually funded by Autodesk in the 1980s, it never created this proprietary public-access network.

In 1974, with the advent of computer networking, Nelson refined his thoughts about Xanadu into a centralised source of information, calling it a " docuverse ".

Lynne's comeback with ELO began in 2000 with the release of a retrospective box set, Flashback, containing three CDs of remastered tracks and a handful of out-takes and unfinished works, most notably a new version of ELO's only UK number one hit " Xanadu ".

Percussionist Neil Peart of the rock band Rush uses the glockenspiel in several of the band's arrangements, most notably in the commercial hit songs " The Spirit of Radio " and " Closer to the Heart ", and also in album tracks " Xanadu " and " Circumstances ".

In 1968, UK pop / rock group Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich had a UK number one hit with " The Legend of Xanadu ".

They are perhaps best-remembered for their 1983 single " She's a Beauty ", a top 10 U. S. hit with a frequently-played music video in the early days of MTV and in the 1980 film Xanadu singing the rock portion of the cross-genre song " Dancin '" opposite a big band.
