# The Ionian Mission ( 1981 )

The Ionian Mission ( 1981 ) is a historical novel by Patrick O ' Brian, set during the Napoleonic Wars.

While Herodotus in many ways reflects some of the best of ancient historiography, nonetheless, some scholars have been increasingly critical of his value as a historical source, especially in regards to the Ionian Revolt.

In historical ancient times it was an important trade centre between the Ionian and the Adriatic coasts.

Chavriata ( Greek: Χαβριάτα ) is a historical, hill-top village located 8 km outside of the town of Lixouri ( Katogi Area ) west-southwest in the Paliki municipal unit on the Greek Ionian island of Kefalonia.

Once the Ionian revolt was finally crushed by the Persian victory at the Battle of Lade, Darius began plans to subjugate Greece.

The fact that the Ionian democracies were inspired by the example of Athens no doubt further persuaded the Athenians to support the Ionian Revolt ; especially since the cities of Ionia were ( supposedly ) originally Athenian colonies.

The Persian naval victory at the Battle of Lade ( 494 BC ) all but ended the Ionian Revolt, and by 493 BC, the last hold-outs were vanquished by the Persian fleet.

In Greece, he encountered an Ionian theologian, who has been identified as Athenagoras of Athens ; while in the east, he was taught by an Assyrian, sometimes identified with Tatian, and a Jew, who was possibly Theophilus of Caesarea.

The first law was seen by both Hegel and Vladimir Lenin as the central feature of a dialectical understanding of things and originates with the ancient Ionian philosopher Heraclitus.

Errors crept in also when Athens replaced its old Attic alphabet with the Ionian alphabet, a change sanctioned by law in 403-2 BC, adding a new complication to the task of copying.

Just as Homer drew extensively on a tradition of oral poetry, sung by wandering minstrels, so Herodotus appears to have drawn on an Ionian tradition of story-telling, collecting and interpreting the oral histories he chanced upon in his travels.

This anomaly can be explained by the fact that Hesiod made a conscious effort to compose like an Ionian epic poet at a time when digamma was not heard in Ionian speech, while Homer tried to compose like an older generation of Ionian bards, when it was heard in Ionian speech.

The Ionian Islands were only briefly ruled by the Ottomans ( Kefalonia from 1479 to 1481 and from 1485 to 1500 ), and remained primarily under the rule of Venice.
