In 1924, the Malden ruins were examined by an archaeologist from the Bishop Museum in Honolulu, Kenneth Emory, who concluded that they were the creation of a small Polynesian population which had resided there for perhaps several generations some centuries earlier.

Malden is the home of the Bootheel Youth Museum.

Barton Green in New Malden, Surrey, where he had attended Beverley Boys School, was named in his honour during the early 1950s and Barton Road at the Yorkshire Air Museum in Elvington, North Yorkshire was named in his honour, on the 46th anniversary of his death.

Two miles ( 3 km ) to the south is the former village of Old Malden from which it gets its name, whose origins go back to Anglo-Saxon times, the name being Old English for Mæl + duna = the cross on the hill.

In the 2001 census, some small areas of New Malden had " Other Asian " ( i. e., other than of Indian sub-continental origin, which also included Chinese ) populations of " over 25 %", though no whole ward reached over 20 %.
