The Mansfield Amendment, the end of the Vietnam War, and the end of the Apollo program reduced ARC's funding from ARPA and NASA.

The Mansfield Amendment of 1973 expressly limited appropriations for defense research ( through ARPA / DARPA ) to projects with direct military application.

* The Mansfield Amendment of 1969, " passed as part of the fiscal year 1970 Military Authorization Act ( Public Law 91-121 ) prohibited military funding of research that lacked a direct or apparent relationship to specfic military function.

When the station re-opened on 7 May 1973, it was given the name Alfreton and Mansfield Parkway, as the nearby town of Mansfield in Nottinghamshire did not have a railway station of its own ( in fact, it was the largest town in Britain without one ).

After retiring from the Senate, Mansfield served as U. S. Ambassador to Japan from 1977 to 1988, and upon retiring as ambassador, was awarded the nation's highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom ( 1989 ), in part for his role in the impeachment of Republican President Richard Nixon Mansfield is the longest serving American ambassador to Japan in history.

After his ambassadorship, Mansfield served for a time as a senior adviser on East Asian affairs to Goldman Sachs, the Wall Street investment banking firm.

That August, Mansfield returned to Cavite in preparation for his return to the United States and eventual discharge.

On March 19, 1970, an advertisement appeared in the Mansfield News Journal for an Iron Butterfly Concert at Ashland College the following evening, with Glass Harp listed as the opening band ( erroneously printed as " The Grass Harp ").

Band members were T-Bone Burnett, Steven Soles, and David Mansfield, plus sidemen who differed from record to record and included: David Kemper ( later drummer for Bob Dylan and Jerry Garcia Band ); gospel great Andrae Crouch ; and former Beatle Ringo Starr.

The group is now recalled mostly as a launching pad for Mansfield, and even more for launching Burnett.
