These shows would always start with a modernized variation of The Muppet Show, titled MuppeTelevision ( see below ).

Kermit the Frog stars as a showrunner who tries to keep control of the antics of the other Muppet characters ( and his temper ), as well as keep the guest stars happy.

In episode 106, Kermit identifies the name of the theater as The Benny Vandergast Memorial Theater, although by the time of It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie, it is simply called " The Muppet Theater.

In a deleted scene from It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie, Kermit reveals that J. P. has died and left the theater to the Muppets in his will.

When Kermit entreats Tex Richman to return the ownership of the Muppet Theater, Tex says no and reveals that the Muppets will also lose their trademark name and rights which he plans to give to an imitation group, the Moopets.

Although the term is often used to refer to any puppet that resembles the distinctive style of The Muppet Show, the term is both an informal name and legal trademark owned by the Walt Disney Company in reference to the original characters created by Henson.

Exceptions include characters appearing on Sesame Street ( as they were previously sold to Sesame Workshop, although they have always had creative rights, only reimbursing The Jim Henson Company to create and provide their Muppet characters for their use ) and the Fraggles of Fraggle Rock ( which are still owned by the Jim Henson Company ).

The legal trademark on the term " Muppet " is currently held by The Muppets Studio, a wholly owned division of the Walt Disney Company, although Sesame Workshop and the Jim Henson Company continue to occasionally use the term on their characters with certain permissions from Disney.

In 1998 the popular segment " Elmo's World ", a fifteen-minute long segment hosted by the Muppet Elmo, was created.

Films produced by current Disney subsidiary The Jim Henson Company have also aired on Disney Channel in the past, although most of them are not presently owned by Disney, including The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Buddy, The Muppet Movie, The Muppets Take Manhattan, The Muppet Christmas Carol, Muppet Treasure Island, Muppets From Space, The Muppets ' Wizard of Oz and The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland.
