* 1898 – The steamer ship SS Mohegan sinks after impacting the Manacles near Cornwall, United Kingdom, killing 106.

Her father, along with his third wife and their daughter, died in the 1898 sinking of the British passenger steamer SS Mohegan.

Heinrich Luitpold Himmler ( 7 October 1900 – 23 May 1945 ) was Reichsführer of the Schutzstaffel ( SS ), a military commander, and a leading member of the Nazi Party ( NSDAP ) of Nazi Germany.

Other victims of German atrocities included 23 Polish children murdered between December 1944 and February 1945, and 24 people ( 23 men and one woman ) murdered by the SS on 7 March 1945, just before the Red Army took over the city without any serious resistance on 8 March 1945.

On 7 June 1942, an advance party of the US 46 Engineer General Service Regiment and 26 Operational Base Unit RAAF boarded the SS Wandana in Townsville headed for Portland Roads.

When the camp resistance warned the Sonderkommando that they were due to be murdered on the morning of October 7, 1944, they attacked the SS and Kapos with two machine guns, axes, knives and grenades.

Not until 7 May 1945 did the last formations of the 11th Army and Waffen SS surrender in the mountains of the Harz.

Some sources suggest that the 9th had up to 6, 000 men, others suggest that the combined total of the 9th and 10th SS was only 6, 000 – 7, 000 men.

On January 6, 1929, Hitler appointed Himmler as the leader of the SS, and by the end of 1932, the SS had 52, 000 members.

By the time the war began, the number of members rose to 250, 000, and the Waffen-SS was formed in August 1940, expanding the earlier armed SS troops who had fought in Poland and France in 1939 – 40, to serve alongside the Wehrmacht, Germany's regular armed forces.

In 1931, as the SS began to increase its membership to over 100, 000, the organization was again restructured beginning with the SS-Oberleitung, which was replaced by the SS-Amt, divided into five sections as follows:

Approximately 25, 000 men served in the Estonian SS division ( with thousands more conscripted into the " Police Front " battalions and border guard units ).

J & E Hall of Dartford, England outfitted the ' SS Selembria ' with a vapor compression system to bring 30, 000 carcasses of mutton from the Falkland Islands in 1886.

During the war, 130, 000 young men from Alsace and Lorraine were forcibly inducted into the German army and in some cases, the Waffen SS.

Those pardoned included people with six-month sentences, 35, 000 people with sentences of up to one year and include more than 3, 000 functionaries of the SA, the SS, and the Nazi Party who participated in dragging victims to jails and camps ; 20, 000 other Nazis sentenced for " deeds against life " ( presumably murder ); 30, 000 sentenced for causing bodily injury, and 5, 200 who committed " crimes and misdemeanors in office.

At the time of Operation Market-Garden, the 10th SS Panzer Division had an approximate strength of 3, 000 men ; an armoured infantry regiment, divisional reconnaissance battalion, two artillery battalions and an engineer battalion, all partially motorized.
