On 17 September 2011 Australia Zoo opened its African Safari exhibit, a multi-species replica of the Serengeti ecosystem, showcasing Zebra, Rhino, Giraffe interacting as they would in the wild.

They are found along most of the perimeter, though camps are few along most of the Serengeti, which is Maasai territory.

As the surrounding landscape is a large swathe of dry Sahel across Africa the swamp is also a haven for migrating animals, especially antelopes such as the endangered Nile Lechwe, Tiang, Reedbuck, and the world's largest population of White-eared Kob, estimated at around 1. 2 million – animal populations comparable to Tanzania's better-known Serengeti National Park.

The years 1935 to 1959, spent at Olduvai Gorge in the Serengeti plains of Northern Tanzania, yielded many stone tools from primitive stone-chopping instruments to multi-purpose hand axes.

Certain protected areas exist that shelter large and exceptionally visible populations of lions, hyenas, leopards and cheetahs, such as Botswana's Chobe, Kenya's Masai Mara, and Tanzania's Serengeti.

The zebra can be found in numerous protected areas across its range, including the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, Tsavo and Masai Mara in Kenya, Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, Etosha National Park in Namibia, and Kruger National Park in South Africa.

The corridor allows wildlife to migrate between dispersal areas and parks that include Tarangire National Park to the southeast, Lake Manyara to the west and the rift valley, Ngorongoro highlands and the Serengeti National Park to the north.

Protected areas that support major populations include Omo ( Ethiopia ), Serengeti, Katavi, Ruaha and Selous-Kilombero ( Tanzania ), Kafue and North Luangwa ( Zambia ), Nyika ( Malawi ), Etosha ( Namibia ), Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park ( Botswana / South Africa ) and Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park ( South Africa ).

The Maasai Mara National Reserve ( also spelled Masai Mara ; known by the locals as The Mara ) is a large game reserve in south-western Kenya, contiguous with the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.

It is famous for its exceptional population of lions, leopards and cheetahs, game, and the annual migration of zebra, Thomson's gazelle, and wildebeest to and fro the Serengeti every year from July to October, known as the Great Migration.

It is bounded by the Serengeti Park to the south, the Siria escarpment to the west, and Maasai pastoral ranches to the north, east and west.

Wildebeest, topi, zebra, and Thomson's gazelle migrate into and occupy the Mara reserve, from the Serengeti plains to the south and Loita plains in the pastoral ranches to the north-east, from July to October or later.
