** In the Star Trek: Voyager episode " One Small Step ", USS Voyager discovers the fate of Ares IV, one of the first manned expeditions to Mars in 2032.

* 1980 – The NASA space probe Voyager I makes its closest approach to Saturn and takes the first images of its rings.

Neptune's rings are very unusual in that they first appeared to be composed of incomplete arcs in Earth-based observations, but Voyager 2's images showed them to be complete rings with bright clumps.

It was the first to include extensive deleted scenes ( although footage cut from the premiere of Voyager had been included in a featurette previously ), and it was the first to include an outtakes or blooper reel.

Around that time, Paramount was sold to Viacom, making Voyager the first Star Trek TV series to premiere after the sale concluded.

Star Trek: Voyager was also the first Star Trek TV show to eliminate the use of models for exterior space shots and exclusively use computer-generated imagery ( CGI ) instead.

In 1987, enduring fan interest, partially preserved by the first four installments of the Star Trek film franchise from 1979 to 1986, those films ' popularity led to the development of the Star Trek sequel Star Trek: The Next Generation, which became extremely successful, and led to the later sequels Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager, and finally Star Trek: Enterprise, which ended in 2005.

The first official UPN network programming was the series Star Trek: Voyager.

Of the network's first few seasons, only Star Trek: Voyager, Moesha, and The Sentinel would last longer than one season.

Greenough's landmark 1972 film Crystal Voyager concluded with an extended sequence ( filmed and edited by Greenough ) that was constructed around the 23-minute Pink Floyd track " Echoes ".

The last vehicles constructed at the site were Bombardier Voyager trains, the plant closed in 2005 ; the engineering company Eddison & Wanless now occupies the site.

This was constructed at the National Maritime Museum in Auckland ( now called Voyager New Zealand ) and was named ' Blue Water Black Magic ' - an interactive exhibit and tribute to Sir Peter.

* 1989 – Voyager 2 spacecraft makes its closest approach to Neptune, the second to last planet in the Solar System at the time.

Two other satellites made observations at the time of the impact: the Ulysses spacecraft, primarily designed for solar observations, was pointed towards Jupiter from its location 2. 6 AU away, and the distant Voyager 2 probe, some 44 AU from Jupiter and on its way out of the Solar System following its encounter with Neptune in 1989, was programmed to look for radio emission in the 1 – 390 kHz range.

An especially popular Viterbi-decoded convolutional code, used at least since the Voyager program has a constraint length k of 7 and a rate r of 1 / 2.

* Mars Pathfinder, Mars Exploration Rover and the Cassini probe to Saturn use a k of 15 and a rate of 1 / 6 ; this code performs about 2 dB better than the simpler k = 7 code at a cost of 256 × in decoding complexity ( compared to Voyager mission codes ).

Little was known about the satellite until Voyager 2 arrived at the end of the 20th century.

On 15 June 2012, scientists at NASA reported that Voyager 1 might be very close to entering interstellar space and becoming the first manmade object to leave the Solar System.

Voyager 1 was launched after its sister probe, but along a shorter and faster trajectory that sent it to Jupiter and Saturn sooner -- but at the cost of not visiting any more of the outer planets.

Even the faster ( at its launch ) New Horizons space probe will not pass it, since the final speed of New Horizons ( after maneuvering within the solar system ) will be less than the current speed of Voyager 1.

It has also reached the termination shock, about 10 billion miles from where Voyager 1 first crossed it, and is traveling outward at roughly 3. 3 AU per year.
