* Molecular graphics images were produced using the UCSF Chimera package from the Resource for Biocomputing, Visualization, and Informatics at the University of California, San Francisco ( supported by NIH P41 RR-01081 ).

UCSF traces its history to Dr. Hugh H. Toland, a South Carolina surgeon who found great success and wealth after moving to San Francisco in 1852.

Parnassus serves as the main campus and includes numerous research labs, the 600 bed UCSF Medical Center, Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute, and UCSF Children's Hospital.

It also houses the UCSF neurology outpatient practice that serves as a referral center of most of Northern California and Reno, Nevada.

Also located on the Parnassus campus is the UCSF Fetal Treatment Center, multidisciplinary care center dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment, and long-term follow-up of fetal birth defects.

The biotechnology company Genentech contributed $ 50 million toward construction of a building as part of a settlement regarding alleged theft of UCSF technology several decades earlier.

UCSF is also in the early stages of planning for a new specialty hospital focused on women, children, and cancer to be built at the Mission Bay campus and scheduled to open by the end of 2014.

The hospital itself is owned and operated by the city of San Francisco, but many of its doctors carry UCSF affiliation and maintain research laboratories at the hospital campus.

UCSF is also affiliated with the San Francisco VA Hospital and the J. David Gladstone Institutes, a private biomedical research entity that has recently moved to a new building adjacent to UCSF's Mission Bay campus.

The myths of the Chimera can be found in Pseudo-Apollodorus ' Bibliotheca ( book 1 ), Homer's Iliad ( book 6 ); Hyginus ' Fabulae 57 and 151 ; Ovid's Metamorphoses ( book VI 339 ; IX 648 ); and Hesiod's Theogony 319ff.

Pliny the Elder cited Ctesias and quoted Photius identifying the Chimera with an area of permanent gas vents which still can be found today by hikers on the Lycian Way in southwest Turkey.

As they investigate a giant insect limb found on the country's shores, the group discover it came from a man-sized Chimera Ant queen, an insect that devours other creatures and then gives birth to progeny that inherit the characteristics of the different species it has eaten.

Victor then goes looking for VJ, who spends a lot of time at the lab, and sees him head under an old clock tower on the Chimera campus.

There also is the origin myth that represents the ægis as a fire-breathing chthonic monster similar to the Chimera, which was slain and flayed by Athena, who afterward wore its skin as a cuirass ( Diodorus Siculus iii.

Pegasus allows the hero to ride him to defeat a monster, the Chimera, before realizing many other exploits.

Pegasus aided the hero Bellerophon in his fight against both the Chimera and the Amazons.

Gaia also marries Tartarus and has Typhon, whom Echidna marries and has Orthos, Kerberos, Hydra, and Chimera.

From Orthos and either Chimera or Echidna were born the Sphinx and the Nemean Lion.

In the 4th century, the dining room was equipped with a fine mosaic floor with one illustration of Zeus, disguised as a bull, abducting Europa and a second depicting Bellerophon killing the Chimera.

So he sent Bellerophon on a mission that he deemed impossible: to kill a fire-breathing monster, the Chimera.

Instead, he sent him to kill the Chimera.

Bellerophon mounted his steed and flew off to where the Chimera was said to dwell.

When he arrived, the Chimera was truly ferocious, and he could not harm the monster even while riding on Pegasus.

He then flew head-on towards the Chimera, holding out the spear as far as he could.

The Chimera suffocated, and Bellerophon returned to King Iobates victorious.

It is related that Polyeidos advised Bellerophon as to how to find and tame Pegasus, in order to kill the Chimera.
