Williams did not opt for an easy assignment playing baseball for the Navy or the Marine Corps, but rather joined the V-5 program to become a Naval aviator.

Naval Aviation Cadets received V-5 flight training along with basic flying indoctrination at the airfield until the facility was closed on 31 October 1945.

During World War II the U. S. Navy V-5 flight training program was conducted at the airport in conjunction with ground training held at Muhlenberg College.

On 1 October 1977, Naval Support Facility, Diego Garcia, was established as the senior US Navy command on the island.
