Janowitz, Mayer, and Wiene would later use the same artistic methods on another production, Genuine, which was less successful commercially and critically.

After Hitler took power in Germany, Wiene left Berlin, and went first to Budapest, where he directed One Night in Venice ( 1934 ), later to London, and finally to Paris where together with Jean Cocteau he tried to produce a sound remake of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.

Together they wrote the script to The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari ( Das Kabinett des Doktor Caligari ), which was filmed by Robert Wiene during 1919 and 1920, and released in February 1920.

Wiene filmed a test scene to prove Warm, Reimann, and Röhrig's theories, and it was so impressive that Pommer gave his artists free rein.

Wiene died in Paris ten days before the end of production of a spy film, Ultimatum, after having suffered from cancer.
