The young William Faulkner in New Orleans in the 1920's impressed the novelist Hamilton Basso as obviously conscious of being a Southerner, and there is no evidence that since then he has ever considered himself any less so.

One of the earliest group automorphisms ( automorphism of a group, not simply a group of automorphisms of points ) was given by the Irish mathematician William Rowan Hamilton in 1856, in his Icosian Calculus, where he discovered an order two automorphism, writing:

Striking southwards in the hope of collecting information about French movements, Nelson's ships stopped at Elba and Naples, where the British ambassador Sir William Hamilton reported that the French fleet had passed Sicily in the direction of Malta.

His publication and design of the classic audio-visual magazines Cinquième Saison and OU between 1958 and 1974, each issue containing recordings as well as texts, images, screenprints and multiples, brought together international contemporary writers and artists such as members of Lettrisme and Fluxus, Jiri Kolar, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Tom Phillips, Brion Gysin, William S. Burroughs and many others, as well as bringing the work of survivors from earlier generations such as Raoul Hausmann and Marcel Janco to a fresh audience.

Jetsprinting as an organised sport originated in New Zealand in 1981, and events were originally held in the same natural braided rivers that had inspired Sir William Hamilton to develop the jetboat, but when the sport was introduced to Australia in the mid-1980s permanent artificial courses were used — and this is now the norm even in New Zealand.

However, he was opposed to the idea of converting atheism into a new form of religion or theology, and cited many " new theologians " such as William Hamilton, Paul Van Buren, Thomas Altizer and Gabriel Vahanian, who promoted this error:

Partly based on the works by the Italian surgeon and anatomist Matteo Realdo Colombo ( c. 1516 – 1559 ), the anatomist William Harvey ( 1578 – 1657 ) described the circulatory system.

William C. DeVries ( born December 19, 1943 ) is an American cardiothoracic surgeon, who performed the first successful permanent artificial heart implantation ( on Barney Clark ), using the Jarvik-7 model.

William Cody's autobiography refers to a Pawnee Indian legend: " While we were in the sandhills, scouting the Niobrara country, the Pawnee Indians brought into camp some very large bones, one of which the surgeon of the expedition pronounced to be the thigh bone of a human being.

William Chester Minor, also known as W. C. Minor ( June 1834 – March 26, 1920 ) was an American army surgeon who, later, was one of the largest contributors of quotations to the Oxford English Dictionary.

In 1863, Dr. William W. Mayo arrived as the examining surgeon for draftees in the Civil War.

In 1880, Scottish surgeon William Macewen ( 1848 – 1924 ) reported on his use of orotracheal intubation as an alternative to tracheotomy to allow a patient with glottic edema to breathe, as well as in the setting of general anesthesia with chloroform.

In 1786 he was appointed deputy surgeon to the British Army and in 1790 he was made Surgeon General by the then Prime Minister William Pitt.

The British could not spare men for manning prizes as they feared that further battles would come up so they burned eleven ships, and only one, Holsteen, returned to England with the wounded under surgeon William Fergusson, where the Royal Navy took her over and renamed her HMS Nassau.
