William Motherwell

William Motherwell ( October 13, 1797, Glasgow – November 1, 1835, Glasgow ), Scottish poet, antiquary and journalist, was born at Glasgow, the son of an ironmonger.

William Motherwell did not know Robert Tannahill, but became very well acquainted with Tannahill's friend and musical collaborator R. A. Smith ( 1780 – 1829 ).

In his role as Sheriff-Clerk Depute, William Motherwell was not averse to " handling a truncheon in defence of the public peace on the streets of Paisley ".

Yet through this William Motherwell carried out useful literary and cultural work, simply by the act of writing down and recording.

This concept had a lasting effect on Motherwell and on other American painters such as Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner and William Baziotes, whom he befriended in New York after a trip to Mexico.

The poets Robert Burns, William Motherwell and Robert Tannahill have all mentioned the castle in their works, while Sir Walter Scott, in his 1820 novel The Abbot, suggested Mary, Queen of Scots, watched the Battle of Langside from beneath its yew tree, although the topography makes this impossible.
