Although the Meng and Shu families unsuccessfully besieged Hou, a loyalist official rose up with the people of Hou and forced Hou Fan to flee to the Qi state.

Eventually, after a year and a half, Confucius and his disciples succeeded in convincing the Shu family to raze the walls of Hou, the Ji family in razing the walls of Bi, and the Meng family in razing the walls of Cheng.

When it was time to dismantle the city walls of the Meng family, the governor was reluctant to have his city walls torn down and convinced the head of the Meng family not to do so.

The Zuo Zhuan recalls that the governor advised against razing the walls to the ground as he said that it made Cheng vulnerable to the Qi state and cause the destruction of the Meng family.

Even though Viscount Meng Yi gave his word not to interfere with an attempt, he went back on his earlier promise to dismantle the walls.

According to accounts in the Zuo Zhuan and Shiji, Confucius departed his homeland in 497 BC after his support to the failed attempt of dismantling the fortified city walls of the powerful Ji, Meng, and Shu families.

Of these, Meng is the best known, being the surname of the philosopher Mencius.

After Qin Shihuang created the first unified Chinese empire in 221 BC, he sent the general Meng Tian to drive the Xiongnu from the region, and incorporated the old Zhao wall into the Qin Dynasty Great Wall of China.

Sun Quan then sent Lü Meng and Ling Tong to lead 20, 000 men to attack southern Jing Province and they succeeded in capturing Changsha, Guiyang, and Lingling commanderies.

Guan Yu was captured by Sun Quan's general Lü Meng ; once captured, Sun Quan executed Guan Yu, Jing Province came under Sun's control, and the Sun-Liu alliance ended.

Because the Later Tang was in decline, Meng Zhixiang found the opportunity to reassert Shu ’ s independence.

Wang Meng was one such painter, and one of his most famous works is the Forest Grotto.

215 BC: Qinshihuang builds the Great Wall ( which included linking existing walls of the Warring States ) and Meng Tian drives the Xiongnu out of the Ordos Loop.

During the Qin Dynasty ( 221 to 206 BC ), the Chinese army, under the command of General Meng Tian, drove the Xiongnu tribes away and recaptured the Ordos region.

Modu also reoccupied all the lands previously taken by the Qin general Meng Tian.

Suggestions include the need for a stronger state to deal with the Qin unification of China that resulted in a loss of Ordos at the hands of Meng Tian, or the political crisis that overtook the Xiongnu in 215 BC, when Qin armies evicted them from their pastures on the Yellow River ;

Soon his breadth of knowledge became so broad that even some elder Confucians could not match him, and Sun Quan was so impressed at Lü Meng's improvements that he often used Lü Meng as a role model for his other generals.

When Lü Meng arrived to his post at Lukou ( 陸口 ), he maintained superficially good relationships with the neighbouring Guan Yu.

In 219, Guan Yu attacked Cao Cao's fortress at Fancheng while leaving troops behind to defend against a possible attack from Lü Meng.

If he saw that Lü Meng was able to eat he would hold a banquet to celebrate ; but if he saw Lü's health degenerating, Sun Quan could not sleep at night.

Despite the efforts from Sun Quan, Lü Meng died at the age of 41.

The last living shaman of the Oroqen, Chuonnasuan ( Meng Jin Fu ), died at the age of 73 on 9 October 2000.

While Wei focused on the natural world, in particular the solitude and reprieve it granted from human life along with the scale of the natural world, Meng Haoran focuses more on foreground details and human life, such as returning villagers waiting at the ferry crossing, fishermen, or ( often unseen ) mountain hermits dwelling in religious seclusion.

Sun Quan was angered and he ordered his general Lü Meng to invade three commanderies in Jing Province-Changsha ( 長沙 ), Lingling ( 零陵 ) and Guiyang ( 桂陽 )-while sending Lu Su to fortify his position at Baqiu ( present-day Yueyang, Hunan ) to block any reinforcements from Guan Yu.

In the subsequent trial of the so-called “ Gang of Four ,” one of the accusations leveled against Jiang Qing was that she conspired “ with Kang Sheng, Chen Boda, and others to take it upon themselves to convene the big meeting July 18, 1967 to apply struggle-and-criticism to Liu Shaoqi, and to carry out a search of his house, physically persecuting the Head of State of the People ’ s Republic of China .” Xiao Meng testified at the trial that “ the slander and persecution of Shaoqi ’ s wife Wang Guangmei was plotted by Jiang Qing and Kang Sheng in person .”

Meng Huo made up stories about Shu Han giving the tribes impossible demands, thus the tribes became angry at Shu and joined the rebellion as well.

Meng Huo had to admit defeat at this point and he vowed to surrender and serve Shu Han from the bottom of his heart.
