As Ertzaintza took a more relevant role in the fight against ETA, it has become a target for them.

Through a series of mergers, ETA has become the largest manufacturer of Swiss watch movements and controls a virtual monopoly over their production and supply.

During all those years of crisis, and restructuring, since 1978, Dr. Ernst Thomke had been at the helm of ETA SA, and also had become CEO of Ebauches SA and appointed on the Board of Directors of ASUAG.

Some examples of " terrorism " in non-democracies include ETA in Spain under Francisco Franco ( although the group's terrorist activities increased sharply after Franco's death ), the Shining Path in Peru under Alberto Fujimori, the Kurdistan Workers Party when Turkey was ruled by military leaders and the ANC in South Africa.

** Miguel Ángel Blanco is kidnapped in Ermua, Spain and murdered by the ETA.

** Fermín Monasterio Pérez is killed by the ETA in Biscay, Spain, being the 4th victim in the name of Basque nationalism.

* December 20 – Spanish prime minister Luis Carrero Blanco is assassinated in Madrid by the terrorist organization ETA.

It is also used as an anthem by ETA and the organizations orbiting the Basque National Liberation Movement.

Jarrai-Haika-Segi, Gestoras pro-Amnistia, Askatasuna and other groups closely related to Batasuna have been also declared illegal by different court rulings on the same charges of having collaborated with or being part of ETA, while these charges and its juridical arguments have been highly disputed.

The party has never condemned any attack by ETA and its leaders have referred sometimes to the ETA members as ' Basque soldiers ', and justified their actions: " ETA does not use the armed struggle as a mean to defend this or that political project but to give < nowiki > Basque Country </ nowiki > democratic channels that enable the popular will to be expressed in full freedom.

The party was suspended for three years by Judge Baltasar Garzón on August 27 to allow him to investigate the party links to ETA.

In September 2008, 14 people were detained by the French police, 10 of whom were from the French-wing of the party ( including their spokesman Xabi Larralde ), and charged with links to ETA.
