Nowadays the term is seldom used, and when it is, it usually is used to distinguish fourteen line poems that do not follow the various rules that describe the sonnet.

Accounts of Renaissance literature usually begin with Petrarch ( best known for the elegantly polished vernacular sonnet sequence of the Canzoniere and for the craze for book collecting that he initiated ) and his friend and contemporary Boccaccio ( author of the Decameron ).

A crown of sonnets or sonnet corona is a sequence of sonnets, usually addressed to one person, and / or concerned with a single theme.
