Originally released for the IBM 6150 RISC workstation, AIX now supports or has supported a wide variety of hardware platforms, including the IBM RS / 6000 series and later IBM POWER and PowerPC-based systems, IBM System i, System / 370 mainframes, PS / 2 personal computers, and the Apple Network Server.

AIX PS / 2 ( also known as AIX / 386 ) was developed by Locus Computing Corporation under contract to IBM.

AIX PS / 2, first released in 1989, ran on IBM PS / 2 personal computers with Intel 386 and compatible processors.

The AIX family of operating systems debuted in 1986, became the standard operating system for the RS / 6000 series on its launch in 1990, and is still actively developed by IBM.

Among other variants, IBM later produced AIX Version 3 ( also known as AIX / 6000 ), based on System V Release 3, for their IBM POWER-based RS / 6000 platform.

Since 1990, AIX has served as the primary operating system for the RS / 6000 series ( later renamed IBM eServer pSeries, then IBM System p, and now IBM Power Systems ).

AIX Version 4, introduced in 1994, added symmetric multiprocessing with the introduction of the first RS / 6000 SMP servers and continued to evolve through the 1990s, culminating with AIX 4. 3. 3 in 1999.

In the late 1990s, under Project Monterey, IBM and the Santa Cruz Operation planned to integrate AIX and UnixWare into a single 32-bit / 64-bit multiplatform UNIX with particular emphasis on running on Intel IA-64 ( Itanium ) architecture CPUs.

The original AIX ( sometimes called AIX / RT ) was developed for the IBM 6150 RT workstation by IBM in conjunction with Interactive Systems Corporation, who had previously ported UNIX System III to the IBM PC for IBM as PC / IX.

Much of the AIX v2 kernel was written in the PL / I programming language, which proved troublesome during the migration to AIX v3.

AIX v2 included full TCP / IP networking, as well as SNA and two networking file systems: NFS, licensed from Sun Microsystems, and Distributed Services ( DS ).

AIX Version 1, introduced in 1986 for the IBM 6150 RT workstation, was based on UNIX System V Releases 1 and 2.

In developing AIX, IBM and Interactive Systems Corporation ( whom IBM contracted ) also incorporated source code from 4. 2 and 4. 3 BSD UNIX.

The ability to run older versions of AIX as a WPAR keeps the opportunity to continue using 5. 2 where the hardware doesn't support it.

AIX / 370 was released in 1990 with functional equivalence to System V Release 2 and 4. 3BSD as well as IBM enhancements.

MySQL works on many different system platforms, including AIX, BSDi, FreeBSD, HP-UX, eComStation, i5 / OS, IRIX, Linux, Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, NetBSD, Novell NetWare, OpenBSD, OpenSolaris, OS / 2 Warp, QNX, Solaris, Symbian, SunOS, SCO OpenServer, SCO UnixWare, Sanos and Tru64.

This was an entirely new product, not a port of the existing OS / 2, that borrowed certain sections of code from both the existing OS / 2 and AIX products while using an entirely new microkernel code base and adding major features including a system registry and a new driver model.

Samba runs on most Unix and Unix-like systems, such as GNU / Linux, Solaris, AIX and the BSD variants, including Apple's Mac OS X Server ( which was added to the Mac OS X client in version 10. 2 ).

Gecko is written in C ++ and is cross-platform, and runs on various operating systems including BSDs, Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris, OS / 2, AIX, OpenVMS, and Microsoft Windows.

There are versions for AIX, eComStation, OS / 2 and Linux operating systems.

This would create easy migration paths between OS / 2, AIX, Mac OS, and Pink by allowing any combination of operating system personalities to run simultaneously on a single computer.

It ran on top of AIX, HP-UX, OS / 2, Windows NT, and a new Apple OS kernel called NuKernel.

The first versions of CommonPoint shipped for AIX and OS / 2 in mid-1995, but were met with a lukewarm response in terms of sales.

System WPARs are software partitions running under one instance of the global AIX OS environment.

The Student Electronic Notebook consisted of the Private Eye, Toshiba diskless AIX notebook computers ( prototypes ) and a stylus based input system plus virtual keyboard, and used direct-sequence spread spectrum radio links to provide all the usual TCP / IP based services, including NFS mounted file systems and X11, all running in the Andrew Project environment.

Support is provided for running both 32 and 64bit AIX executables.

DPS 6 and DPS 4 ( ex-Level 62 ) were superseded by Motorola 68000-and later on PowerPC minicomputers running Unix and the product lines were discontinued, though GCOS 6 ran in an emulator on top of AIX.

VM was also utilized in data centers converting from DOS / VSE to OS / MVS and is useful when running mainframe AIX and Linux, platforms that were to become increasingly important.

CHRP did not catch on, however, and the only systems to ship with actual CHRP hardware were certain members of IBM's RS / 6000 series running AIX ( though Mac OS 8 claimed to support CHRP-based systems ).

The AIX and Solaris versions of nohup have a option that modifies a running process to ignore future SIGHUP signals.

At present, there are only UNIX clients for workstations running Solaris 2. 3 or greater, AIX and SCO UNIX, but it will be ported to other Unixes eventually.

AIX is based on UNIX System V with 4. 3BSD-compatible extensions.

AIX 6 was announced in May 2007 and ran an open beta from June 2007 until the general availability ( GA ) of AIX 6. 1 on November 9, 2007.

Major new features in AIX 6. 1 included full role-based access control, workload partitions ( which enable application mobility ), enhanced security ( Addition of AES encryption type for NFS v3 and v4 ) and Live Partition Mobility on the POWER6 hardware.

With the introduction of the ESA / 390 architecture, AIX / 370 was replaced by AIX / ESA in 1991, which was based on OSF / 1, and also ran on the System / 390 platform.

The original KornShell, < tt > ksh88 </ tt >, is the default shell on AIX since version 4. with ksh93 available separately.

While i5 / OS, AIX, Linux and Lotus Domino are supported on the POWER processors, Windows is supported with either single-processor internal blade servers ( IXS ) or externally linked multiple-processor servers ( IXA and iSCSI ).

The IBM System i also provides an environment for AIX applications to run natively on i5 / OS without the need for an AIX LPAR.

While the server can run on Microsoft Windows, Linux or AIX, client support for any operating system other than Microsoft Windows is dropped.

This file system, now called JFS1 on AIX, had been the premier file system for AIX over the following decade and had been installed in thousands or millions of customers ' AIX systems.
