Aalen is situated on the upper reaches of the river Kocher, at the foot of the Swabian Jura which lies to the south and south-east, and close to the hilly landscapes of the Ellwanger Berge to the north and the Welland to the north-west.

Aalen ’ s territory ranges over all lithostratigraphic groups of the south-German Jurassic: Aalen ’ s south and the Flexner massif are on top of the Weißer Jura ( White Jurassic ), the town centre is on the Brauner Jura ( Brown Jurassic ), and a part of Wasseralfingen is on the Schwarzer Jura ( Black Jurassic ).
Most parts of the territory are on the Opalinuston-Formation ( Opalinum Clay Formation ) of the Aalenian subdivision, which is named after Aalen.
A good way for tourists to get to know the Swabian Jura is to travel on the Schwäbische Albstraße, a " National Scenic Byway ", leading from Tuttlingen or Trossingen to Nördlingen or Aalen.
Federally, the district is part of two electoral ridings: 270 ( Backnang – Schwäbisch Gmünd ) and 271 ( Aalen – Heidenheim ).
At the State level, the district also is part of two electoral ridings: 25 ( Schwäbisch Gmünd ) and 26 ( Aalen ).
It is situated about 17 km north of Aalen.
