The gods in the Rig-Veda are mostly personified concepts, who fall into two categories: the devas – who were gods of nature – such as the weather deity Indra ( who is also the King of the gods ), Agni (" fire "), Usha (" dawn "), Surya (" sun ") and Apas (" waters ") on the one hand, and on the other hand the asuras – gods of moral concepts – such as Mitra (" contract "), Aryaman ( guardian of guest, friendship and marriage ), Bhaga (" share ") or Varuna, the supreme Asura ( or Aditya ).

Being an Aditya, Savitr is true to the eternal Law and act as the debt exactor.

Arthur Berriedale Keith in “ The Religion and Philosophy of the Veda and Upanishads, Vol 2 ” has noted that Savitr is never mentioned as having part in the Soma sacrifice, " a fact which is doubtless fair evidence that the Rig veda did not know him as having a place in the rite, and that he was later brought in, perhaps because of his growing importance, perhaps as an Aditya.

The memory of the King is perpetuated by an engraved figure in one of the prakarams ( closed precincts of a temple ) of the temple and the name of the chief deity, Shiva, as ' Aditya Varmeswara '.

In most Indic languages, the word for Sunday is Ravi-vāsara or Aditya-vāsara or its derived forms — vāsara meaning day, Aditya and Ravi both being a style ( manner of address ) for Surya, the chief solar deity and one of the Adityas.

In the Thai solar calendar of Thailand, the name (" Waan Arthit ") is derived from Aditya, and the associated color is red.

The most powerful deities, such as Yama, Brahma, Shiva, and Agni, are now dead or sworn enemies of Heaven.

Her four legs are the scriptural Vedas ; her horns are the triune gods Brahma ( tip ), Vishnu ( middle ) and Shiva ( base ); her eyes are the sun and moon gods, her shoulders the fire-god Agni and the wind-god Vayu and her legs the Himalayas.

Mention of Sri Jagannath and the Purusottama Kshetra abound in Puranic literature of Matsya Purana, Vishnu Purana, Agni Purana, Padma Purana, Narada Purana, Brahma Purana and Skanda Purana.

These mantras salute Soma, Gandharva, Agni, Indra, Vayu, the Aswini Devas, Savita, Brihaspati, Viswa Devas and Varuna for blessing the marriage and beseeches them to confer long wedded life, health, wealth, children and freedom from all kinds of worries.

In the Vedic pantheon () or () or Dyaus Pitar is the Sky Father, divine consort of the Prithvi and father of Agni, Indra ( RV 4. 17. 4 ), and Ushas, the daughter representing dawn.

The union of Dyaus Pita and Prithvi Mata gave rise to other Vedic deities and demi-gods like Indra, Agni, Ushas etc.

Some gods are associated with specific elements or functions: Indra ( the king of gods, the god of thunder and lightning ; he also rules the world of Swarga ), Varuna ( the god of the oceans ), Agni ( the god of fire ), Kubera ( the treasurer of the gods ), Surya ( the sun god ), Vayu ( the god of wind ), and Soma ( the moon god ).

She is the mother of Indra and Agni.

Many of the names of the Indo-Aryan deities ( e. g. Agni, Indra, Varuna ) are almost synonymous with deities in Persian, Greek and Roman mythology ( see Proto-Indo-European religion ).

The most ancient Vedic devas included Indra, Agni, Soma, Varuna, Mitra, Savitri, Rudra, Prajapati, Vishnu, Aryaman, and the ashvins.

Thus Indra, the chief of the devas, was regarded as the regent of the east ; Agni, the fire, was in the same way associated with the southeast ; Yama, lord of death and justice with the south ; Surya, the sun, with the southwest ; Varuna, originally the representative of the all-embracing heaven ( atmosphere ), now the god of the ocean, with the west ; Vayu ( or Pavana ), the wind, with the northwest ; Kubera, the god of wealth, with the north ; and Soma with the northeast.

Indra and Agni are portrayed as consuming Soma in copious quantities.

He is yellow-haired, an attribute shared with Agni and Indra.

As a feminine noun, svāhā in the Rigveda may also mean " oblation " ( to Agni or Indra ), and as oblation personified, Svāhā is a minor goddess, and the wife of Agni.

In the Rigveda the adjective in its lexical meaning " skillful " is also applied to Indra, Agni and the Adityas.

Together with these weapons, Arjuna and Krishna waged a successful battle against Indra and helped Agni burn down the entire Khandava Vana including all its demons and evil spirits.

The Rigveda is a collection of hymns to various deities, most notably heroic Indra, Agni the sacrificial fire and messenger of the gods, and Soma, the deified sacred drink of the Indo-Iranians.

:" They call him Indra, Mitra, Varuṇa, Agni, and he is heavenly nobly-winged Garutmān.

Indra and Agni emerged from his mouth.

Hymn 3. 3. 3 writes of Indra and his twin brother Agni killing darkness with light: " Killing the darkness at the light's foundation, the Couple newly born attain their beauty.

* The east-facing pediment on the northern library shows the god of the sky Indra creating rain to put out a forest fire started by the god of fire Agni for purposes of killing the nāga king Takṣaka who lived in Khāṇḍava Forest.

The main Devas addressed in the Rig Veda are Indra, Agni ( fire ) and Soma, the latter two representing modes of sacrifice, called yagna.

“ From fear ( here, power ) of Him the wind blows ; from fear of Him the sun rises ; from fear of Him Agni and Indra and Death, the fifth, run.

The Gods Indra, Agni, Varuna and Yama were on their way for attendance when they meet Nala.

He recites mantras in praise of Bhaga, Aryama, Savita, Indra, Agni, Suryan, Vayu and Saraswati, while holding the bride's hand.
