In Aeschylus ' Oresteia trilogy, Clytemnestra kills her husband, King Agamemnon because he had sacrificed their daughter Iphigenia to proceed forward with the Trojan war, and Cassandra, a prophetess of Apollo.

According to the dramatist Aeschylus, in the distant past they had lived in Scythia ( modern Crimea ), at the Palus Maeotis (" Lake Maeotis ", the Sea of Azov ), but later moved to Themiscyra on the River Thermodon ( the Terme river in northern Turkey ).

Aeschylus was one of many Greeks who had been initiated into the Eleusinian Mysteries, a cult to Demeter based in his hometown of Eleusis.

Nevertheless, according to Aristotle some thought that Aeschylus had revealed some of the cult's secrets on stage.

The opera Les Danaïdes ( The Danaids ) is a five-act tragédie lyrique ; the plot was based on an ancient Greek legend that had been the basis for the first play in a trilogy by Aeschylus, entitled The Suppliants.

According to Aeschylus in the prologue of the Eumenides, it had origins in prehistoric times and the worship of Gaia.

Aeschylus and Sophocles were innovative, but Euripides had arrived at a position in the " ever-changing genre " where he could move easily between tragic, comic, romantic and political effects, a versatility that appears in individual plays and also over the course of his career.

However, " his plays continued to be applauded even after those of Aeschylus and Sophocles had come to seem remote and irrelevant ", they became school classics in the Hellenistic period ( as mentioned in the introduction ) and, due to Seneca's adaptation of his work for Roman audiences, " it was Euripides, not Aeschylus or Sophocles, whose tragic muse presided over the rebirth of tragedy in Renaissance Europe.

Similar editions had appeared for Aeschylus and Sophoclesthe only plays of theirs that survive today: " The rise of Goths and Tartars throughout the Roman world from the gutter to the throne, the destruction of libraries by choleric and fanatical popes and emperors, were unfavourable to the progress but not entirely fatal to the preservation of literary studies.

Finally, just as Aeschylus gave Prometheus a key role in bringing Zeus to power, he also attributed to him secret knowledge that could lead to Zeus's downfall: Prometheus had been told by his mother Gaia of a potential marriage that would produce a son who would overthrow Zeus.

His program of new constructions included a new theatre, designed by Damocopos, which gave the city a flourishing cultural life: this in turn attracted personalities as Aeschylus, Ario of Metimma, Eumelos of Corinth and Sappho, who had been exiled here from Mytilene.

Meanwhile tragedy, as developed by Athenian dramatists of the calibre of Aeschylus and Sophocles, had begun to emerge as the leading poetic genre, borrowing the literary dialect, the metres and poetic devices of lyric poetry in general and the dithyramb in particular ( Aristotle Poetics IV 1449a ).

Aristophanes, a comic playwright, defines and shapes the idea of comedy almost as Aeschylus had shaped tragedy as an art form — Aristophanes ' most famous plays include the Lysistrata and The Frogs.

As Aeschylus tells it, the punishment ended there, but according to Euripides, in order to escape the persecutions of the Erinyes, Orestes was ordered by Apollo to go to Tauris, carry off the statue of Artemis which had fallen from heaven, and to bring it to Athens.

According to an anonymous biographer of Aeschylus, the Athenians chose Simonides ahead of Aeschylus to be the author of an epigram honouring their war-dead at Marathon, which led the tragedian ( who had fought at the battle and whose brother had died there ) to withdraw sulking to the court of Hieron of Syracuse — the story is probably based on the inventions of comic dramatists but it is likely that Simonides did in fact write some kind of commemorative verses for the Athenian victory at Marathon.

According to Aeschylus, Orestes saw Electra's face before the tomb of Agamemnon, where both had gone to perform rites to the dead ; a recognition took place, and they arranged how Orestes should accomplish his revenge.

Aeschylus says in passing that Tithonus also had a mortal wife, named Cissia ( otherwise unknown ).

According to Hesiod Geryon had one body and three heads, whereas the tradition followed by Aeschylus gave him three bodies.

Aristophanes, a comic playwright, defines and shapes the idea of comedy almost as Aeschylus had shaped tragedy as an art form — Aristophanes ' most famous plays include the Lysistrata and The Frogs.

He also began a correspondence with David Ruhnken, the veteran scholar of Leiden, requesting fragments of Aeschylus that Ruhnken had come across in his collection of unpublished lexicons and grammarians, and sending him his restoration of a corrupt passage in the Supplices ( 673 – 677 ) by the help of a nearly equally corrupt passage of Plutarch's Eroticus.

The plays of Euripides, like those of Aeschylus and Sophocles, were circulated in written form in the fifth century among literary members of the audience and performers at minor festivals, as aide-memoirs.

Many more errors came from the tendency of actors to interpolate words and sentences, producing so many corruptions and variations that a law was proposed by Lycurgus of Athens in 330 BC "... that the plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides should be written down and preserved in a public office ; and that the town clerk should read the text over with the actors ; and that all performances which did not comply with this regulation should be illegal.

Of the hundreds of tragedies written and performed during the classical age, only a limited number of plays by three authors have survived: Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides.

The epic Danais was written by one of the cyclic poets ; the name of the author and the narration of these events does not survive, but the Danaid tetralogy of Aeschylus undoubtedly draws upon its material.

A now lost play about Phineus, Phineus, was written by Aeschylus and was the first play in the trilogy that included The Persians, produced in 472 B. C.

Bia is one of the characters named in the Greek tragedy Prometheus Bound, written by Aeschylus, where Hephaestus is compelled by the gods to bind Prometheus after he was caught stealing fire and offering the gift to mortals.

The Oresteia () is a trilogy of Greek tragedies written by Aeschylus which concerns the end of the curse on the House of Atreus.

His first appearance in print was in a short notice of C. G. Schütz's Aeschylus in Paul Henry Maty's Review, written in 1783.

* Philocles: A nephew of the great tragedian, Aeschylus, he wrote a play about Tereus that was a feeble descendant of the Tereus written by Sophocles and he is nicknamed ' Lark ' ( lines 281, 1295 ).

The earliest known reference to walking a red carpet in literature is in the play Agamemnon by Aeschylus, written in 458 BC.

The only example is the Suffering of Christ ( Christus Patiens, Χριστος πασχον ), written in the eleventh or 12th century ; of its 2, 640 verses, about one-third are borrowed from ancient dramas, chiefly from those of Euripides, and Mary, the chief character, sometimes recites verses from the " Medea " of Euripides, again from the " Electra " of Sophocles, or the " Prometheus " of Aeschylus.

As Io tells her own story in Aeschylus ' Prometheus Bound, she rejected his whispered nighttime advances until the oracles caused her own father to drive her out into the fields of Lerna.

The designs for the Iliad and Odyssey were commissioned by Mrs Hare Naylor ; those for Dante by Hope ( originally published in London in 1807 ); those for Aeschylus by Lady Spencer ; they were all engraved by Piroli, not without considerable loss of the finer and more sensitive qualities of Flaxman's own lines.

But Achilles fought bravely at the death of his lover Patroclus though he knew that the fight would bring his own death closer ; Phaedrus here takes Aeschylus to task for making Achilles the " lover " ( 180a ), claiming instead that Achilles was the beautiful, still-beardless, younger " beloved " of Patroclus and citing Homer in his support.

* Aeschylus: A renowned tragic poet, he is named by Pisthetaerus as the author of a verse about heroes being shot with their own arrows / feathers ( line 808 ) – the verse was borrowed from the now lost play Myrmidons.

Euripides ' own recognition scene clearly parodies Aeschylus ' account.

Aeschylus in the tragedy Myrmidons made Achilles the protector since he had avenged his love ’ s death even though the gods told him it would cost his own life.

Shelley's own introduction to the play explains his intentions behind the work and he defends the artistic freedom he has taken in his adaptation of Aeschylus ' myth:
