Alp Arslan ( ālp arslān ; ālb ārslān ; 1029 – 15 December 1072 ) was the third sultan of the Seljuq dynasty and great-grandson of Seljuk, the eponymous founder of the dynasty.
His real name was Muhammad bin Da ' ud Chaghri, and for his military prowess, personal valour, and fighting skills he obtained the surname Alp Arslan, which means " Heroic Lion " in Turkish.
Alp Arslan defeated Kutalmish for the throne and succeeded on 27 April 1064 as sultan of Great Seljuq, and thus became sole monarch of Persia from the river Oxus to the Tigris.
Emperor Romanos IV was himself taken prisoner and conducted into the presence of Alp Arslan, who treated him with generosity, and, terms of peace having been agreed to, dismissed him, loaded with presents and respectfully attended by a military guard.
Domestic affairs were handled by his able vizier, Nizam al-Mulk, the founder of the administrative organization which characterized and strengthened the sultanate during the reigns of Alp Arslan and his son, Malik Shah.
This type of military fiefdom enabled the nomadic Turks to draw on the resources of the sedentary Persians, Turks and other established cultures within the Seljuq realm, and allowed Alp Arslan to field a huge standing army, without depending on tribute from conquest to pay his soldiery.
Alp Arslan, who took great pride in his reputation as the foremost archer of his time, motioned to his guards not to interfere and drew his bow, but his foot slipped, the arrow glanced aside and he received the assassin's dagger in his breast.
Alp Arslan died four days later from this wound on 25 November 1072 in his 42nd year, and was taken to Merv to be buried next to his father Chaghri Beg.
From 2002 to July 2008 under Turkmen calendar reform, the month of August was named after Alp Arslan.

In 1071, Sultan Alp Arslan put an end to Byzantine dominance in the east with his most convincing at the battle on the plains of Manzikert where Emperor Romanos IV Diogenes was taken captive.

When Romanos IV was defeated and captured by Alp Arslan of the Seljuk Turks at the Battle of Manzikert in August 1071, Michael VII remained in the background, while the initiative was taken by his uncle John Doukas and his tutor Michael Psellos.
The last years of Bagrat's reign coincided with what Professor David Marshall Lang described as " the final débacle of eastern Christendom " — the Battle of Manzikert — in which Alp Arslan dealt a crushing defeat to the Byzantine army, capturing the emperor Romanos IV, who soon died in misery.

In 1064, he participated in the unsuccessful defense of Ani against the Seljuk leader Alp Arslanand his allies: the Caucasian Georgians headed by King Bagrat IV of Georgia and Albanians headed by King Goridzhan. He served afterwards under Michael VII Doukas ( 1071 – 78 ) and Nikephoros III Botaneiates ( 1078 – 81 ) in various responsible positions on both the eastern and the western frontiers of the empire.

The dynasty was founded by Sebuktigin, upon his succession to rule Ghazna ( modern-day Ghazni Province in Afghanistan ) after his father-in-law, Alp Tigin, who was a break-away ex-general of the Samanids from Balk, north of the Hindu Kush in Khorasan.
In 1068 Alp Arslan and allied Turkmen tribes recaptured many Abbasid lands and even invaded Byzantine regions, pushing further into eastern and central Anatolia after a major victory at the Battle of Manzikert in 1071.
