Amersham is a market town and civil parish within Chiltern district in Buckinghamshire, England, north west of London, in the Chiltern Hills.

Amersham is split into two distinct areas: Old Amersham, set in the valley of the River Misbourne, which contains the 13th century parish church of St. Mary's and several old pubs and coaching inns ; and Amersham-on-the-Hill, which grew rapidly around the railway station in the early part of the 20th century.

In 1521 seven Lollard dissenters ( William Tylsworth, John Scrivener, Thomas Barnard, James Morden, Robert Rave, Thomas Holmes and Joan Norman ) were burned at the stake in Amersham A memorial to them was built in 1931 and is inscribed as follows: " In the shallow of depression at a spot 100 yards left of this monument seven Protestants, six men and one woman were burned to death at the stake.

It is now known locally as " Top Amersham "," the Top Town " or " the New Town ".

At local level, Amersham is represented by its own town council.

Old Amersham is situated on the valley floor of the River Misbourne.

Amersham on the Hill is built on the north side of the Misbourne valley, on a small plateau that forms the watershed between the Misbourne and the neighbouring River Chess.

Amersham is linked to London by the Metropolitan Line of London Underground and is the last station on the Metropolitan main line.

A campaign of opposition to the impact on the town and the surrounding area of the preferred route is being locally co-ordinated by a protest group, Amersham Action Group, which along with other protest groups is part of the HS2 Action Alliance.

This became Amersham International, then Amersham plc, and now, after a number of changes of ownership and name, is part of GE Healthcare.

Amersham on the Hill has a Free church which is United Reformed and Baptist, the Methodist church St. John's and the Church of England St Michael & All Angels.

Old Amersham includes the Church of England St Mary's Church ( a Grade I listed building since December 1958 ), the exterior is Victorian but it includes 17th century glass from Lamer Manor in Hertfordshire and monuments in the chancel to 17th and 18th century notables.

Additionally, Amersham is included in the catchment areas of both Dr Challoner's High School, a girls ' grammar school in Little Chalfont, and Chesham Grammar School, a co-educational grammar school in Chesham.

Amersham is served by several primary schools, including Our Lady's Roman Catholic Primary, Chestnut Lane School, Elangeni School, Chesham Bois Church of England School, St. Mary's Church of England Primary School, St. George's Church of England Infant School and Woodside Junior School.

Amersham is also served by Amersham & Wycombe College for further education.

Amersham has a King George's Field in memorial to King George V. Near the playing field is the " Chiltern Pools ", one of the two venues used by the Amersham Swimming Club.

Chesham and Amersham is a parliamentary constituency represented in the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom.

In 2004 Amersham Biosciences was acquired by GE Healthcare.

It is situated in the Chess Valley and surrounded by farmland, as well as being bordered on one side by Amersham and Chesham Bois.

There is a fire station located in Bellingdon Road which is supplemented by services from the station at Amersham and other nearby towns.

The popularity is due partly to the town's easy access to London by road, partly to Wendover railway station, served by Chiltern Railways from London Marylebone via Amersham, and partly because it is so picturesque.

Amersham station is also served by Chiltern Railways, which runs trains between London Marylebone and Aylesbury.

The rolling stock ordered by London Underground as part of this project, the A60 stock, is named after Amersham.

In 1934 it came together with the other villages to form the civil parish of Cholesbury-cum-St Leonards and became part of Amersham Rural District which as part of the 1974 Local Government reorganisation was succeeded by Chiltern District.

Maintenance of an independent community separate from the Wycombe conurbation has been helped not only by the village's historic connections with the Missendens, Penn Street and Amersham but also by the presence in the village of a full range of amenities including: pre-schools ; primary and secondary schools ; three different Christian denomination churches ( Anglican, Baptist, Methodist ); a GP practice ; a dental practice ; three pubs ( The Bat and Ball, The Earl Howe and The Old Oak ); two clubs ( The British Legion and the Holmer Green Sports Association ); and good sports facilities.

Being only a short drive from both Amersham to the east, and High Wycombe to the south-west, the village is suitably located for commuting into London by fast mainline railway on the Chiltern line which takes about 40 minutes, or on the Metropolitan line which is slower.

Regular bus services operated by Arriva Shires & Essex connect Holmer Green to High Wycombe, Amersham, Chesham, Berkhamsted, and Hemel Hempstead ; Carousel Buses also serve the village.

She went on to stand for Labour at Chesham and Amersham in the 1992 general election, increasing the Labour share by 18 %.

Amersham sent two MPs to the unreformed House of Commons from 1625, and was considered a rotten borough until the Reform Act 1832 stripped it of its representation.

There are two of the ' big five ' supermarkets present which have impacted on the town's independent stores and all retail outlets have also to compete with other nearby town centres, at Amersham, Berkhamsted and Tring as well as the large shopping centres in High Wycombe, Watford and Milton Keynes.

In 2009, because of financial constraints, Transport for London ( TfL ) decided to stop work on a project to provide step-free access at Amersham and five other stations, on the grounds that these are relatively quiet stations and some are already one or two stops away from an existing step-free station.

From December 2010, off-peak Metropolitan line services to and from Amersham were reduced to two per hour, simultaneously with a corresponding increase in through services on the Chesham branch.

Little Chalfont is home to two industrial laboratories and an office development, part of GE Healthcare, originally the Radiochemical Centre, and then Amersham International.

The station is the junction for four LU tracks from Baker Street ( paired by direction ), two Network Rail tracks from Marylebone, four LU tracks ( paired by speed ) to Amersham and the double-track LU line to Uxbridge which leaves via a burrowing junction west of the station.

The college consists of three campuses ; the primary site being located in Amersham, with two smaller additional campuses located in neighbouring towns of High Wycombe and Chesham.
