Amersham is a market town and civil parish within Chiltern district in Buckinghamshire, England, north west of London, in the Chiltern Hills.

Amersham is split into two distinct areas: Old Amersham, set in the valley of the River Misbourne, which contains the 13th century parish church of St. Mary's and several old pubs and coaching inns ; and Amersham-on-the-Hill, which grew rapidly around the railway station in the early part of the 20th century.

In 1521 seven Lollard dissenters ( William Tylsworth, John Scrivener, Thomas Barnard, James Morden, Robert Rave, Thomas Holmes and Joan Norman ) were burned at the stake in Amersham A memorial to them was built in 1931 and is inscribed as follows: " In the shallow of depression at a spot 100 yards left of this monument seven Protestants, six men and one woman were burned to death at the stake.

It is now known locally as " Top Amersham "," the Top Town " or " the New Town ".

At local level, Amersham is represented by its own town council.

Amersham is represented by two members elected for the Amersham division on Buckinghamshire County Council.

Old Amersham is situated on the valley floor of the River Misbourne.

Amersham on the Hill is built on the north side of the Misbourne valley, on a small plateau that forms the watershed between the Misbourne and the neighbouring River Chess.

Amersham is linked to London by the Metropolitan Line of London Underground and is the last station on the Metropolitan main line.

A campaign of opposition to the impact on the town and the surrounding area of the preferred route is being locally co-ordinated by a protest group, Amersham Action Group, which along with other protest groups is part of the HS2 Action Alliance.

This became Amersham International, then Amersham plc, and now, after a number of changes of ownership and name, is part of GE Healthcare.

Amersham on the Hill has a Free church which is United Reformed and Baptist, the Methodist church St. John's and the Church of England St Michael & All Angels.

Old Amersham includes the Church of England St Mary's Church ( a Grade I listed building since December 1958 ), the exterior is Victorian but it includes 17th century glass from Lamer Manor in Hertfordshire and monuments in the chancel to 17th and 18th century notables.

Additionally, Amersham is included in the catchment areas of both Dr Challoner's High School, a girls ' grammar school in Little Chalfont, and Chesham Grammar School, a co-educational grammar school in Chesham.

Amersham is also served by Amersham & Wycombe College for further education.

Amersham has a King George's Field in memorial to King George V. Near the playing field is the " Chiltern Pools ", one of the two venues used by the Amersham Swimming Club.

The popularity is due partly to the town's easy access to London by road, partly to Wendover railway station, served by Chiltern Railways from London Marylebone via Amersham, and partly because it is so picturesque.

Amersham station is also served by Chiltern Railways, which runs trains between London Marylebone and Aylesbury.

In the northbound direction the station is served primarily by trains to Watford, and occasionally at peak times by ' slow ' Amersham and Chesham trains (' fast ' trains do not stop at stations between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Moor Park ).

The electrification was then extended north to Amersham and Chesham, leaving Aylesbury services to be served by British Rail Class 115 diesel multiple unit trains ( since replaced by Chiltern Railways Class 165 and Class 168 units ).

In 2004 Amersham Biosciences was acquired by GE Healthcare.

It is situated in the Chess Valley and surrounded by farmland, as well as being bordered on one side by Amersham and Chesham Bois.

There is a fire station located in Bellingdon Road which is supplemented by services from the station at Amersham and other nearby towns.

The rolling stock ordered by London Underground as part of this project, the A60 stock, is named after Amersham.

In 1934 it came together with the other villages to form the civil parish of Cholesbury-cum-St Leonards and became part of Amersham Rural District which as part of the 1974 Local Government reorganisation was succeeded by Chiltern District.

Maintenance of an independent community separate from the Wycombe conurbation has been helped not only by the village's historic connections with the Missendens, Penn Street and Amersham but also by the presence in the village of a full range of amenities including: pre-schools ; primary and secondary schools ; three different Christian denomination churches ( Anglican, Baptist, Methodist ); a GP practice ; a dental practice ; three pubs ( The Bat and Ball, The Earl Howe and The Old Oak ); two clubs ( The British Legion and the Holmer Green Sports Association ); and good sports facilities.

Being only a short drive from both Amersham to the east, and High Wycombe to the south-west, the village is suitably located for commuting into London by fast mainline railway on the Chiltern line which takes about 40 minutes, or on the Metropolitan line which is slower.

Regular bus services operated by Arriva Shires & Essex connect Holmer Green to High Wycombe, Amersham, Chesham, Berkhamsted, and Hemel Hempstead ; Carousel Buses also serve the village.

She went on to stand for Labour at Chesham and Amersham in the 1992 general election, increasing the Labour share by 18 %.

From a brief period from the close of the Amersham acquisition in April 2004-June 2005, GE Healthcare was organized into two primary business segments: GE Healthcare Technologies, led by Joseph Hogan, and GE Healthcare Bio-Sciences, the former Amersham business segments that were led by Peter Löscher.

The college consists of three campuses ; the primary site being located in Amersham, with two smaller additional campuses located in neighbouring towns of High Wycombe and Chesham.

There are two secondary schools located in Amersham ; Dr Challoner's Grammar School a grammar school for boys and the Amersham School a secondary modern school ( more usually referred to as a community school ).

The Dr Challoner's schools share a common foundation dating back to 1624 when the grammar school ( then for boys only ) started in Old Amersham.

The catchment area secondary schools are :- Chiltern Hills Academy and Chesham Grammar School in Chesham, Dr Challoner's Grammar School for boys in Amersham and – Dr Challoner's High School for girls in Little Chalfont.

The film was shot mainly in London and the Home Counties, including Hampstead, Greenwich Hospital, Betchworth in Surrey, Amersham in Buckinghamshire, St Bartholomew-the-Great ( wedding # 4 ) and West Thurrock in Essex.

A variety of other martyrs for the Lollard cause were executed during the next century, including the Amersham Martyrs in the early 1500s and Thomas Harding who died in 1532, one of the last Lollards to be persecuted.
