Amos Bronson Alcott ( November 29, 1799 – March 4, 1888 ) was an American teacher, writer, philosopher, and reformer.

A native New Englander, Amos Bronson Alcott was born in Wolcott, Connecticut ( only recently renamed from " Farmingbury ") on November 29, 1799.

Amos, an older contemporary of Hosea and Isaiah, was active c. 750 BC during the reign of Jeroboam II, making the Book of Amos the first biblical prophetic book written.

Amos was a prophet during the reign of Jeroboam ben Joash ( Jeroboam II ), ruler of Israel from 793 BC to 753 BC, and the reign of Uzziah, King of Judah, at a time when both kingdoms ( Israel in the North and Judah in the South ) were peaking in prosperity.

Amos also made it a point that before his calling he was a simple husbandman and that he was not a " professional " prophet of the prophetic guild.

There are some differing opinions as to the location of the Tekoa Amos was presumably from.

It is believed by most that Amos was a southern farmer, called by God to deliver his prophetic message in the North.

However, some believe that Amos was actually from a Tekoa in the North, near Galilee.

They believe that it is more probable that Amos was from the North because it has conditions more suitable for the cultivation of sycamore figs than the Tekoa of the South.

However, Amos came to tell the people that " the Day of the LORD " was coming soon and that it meant divine judgment and justice for their own iniquity.

In the book The Neyer / James Guide to Pitchers, sports journalist Rob Neyer wrote that the speed with which pitchers like Cy Young, Amos Rusie, and Jouett Meekin threw was the impetus that caused the move.

Early in her professional career, Amos befriended author Neil Gaiman, who became a fan after she referenced him in the song " Tear in Your Hand " and also in print interviews.

Amos has also released more than 30 singles and 60 B-sides, and has contributed original material to nine film soundtracks, including Higher Learning ( 1995 ), Twister ( 1996 ), Great Expectations ( 1998 ) and Mission: Impossible II ( 2000 ).

The accomplished publisher also gained a flair for public speaking, and Harding in 1899 was elected to fill the Ohio State Senate seat for the 13th Senatorial District, despite Amos Kling's financing of a primary opponent.

He also made the acquaintance, while still a child, of the physical chemist Arthur Amos Noyes.

He also appeared in the Amos ' n ' Andy film Check and Double Check ( 1930 ).
