Most of the forests are evergreen, but there are areas of deciduous forest on North Andaman, Middle Andaman, Baratang and parts of South Andaman Island.

The South Andaman forests have a profuse growth of epiphytic vegetation, mostly ferns and orchids.

The Andaman forests are largely unspoiled, despite logging and the demands of the fast-growing population driven by immigration from the Indian mainland.

The coastal areas of the Andaman Sea are characterized by mangrove forests and seagrass meadows.

A significant part of the Thai mangrove forests in the Andaman Sea was removed during the extensive brackish water shrimp.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the state of Gujarat have 200 each while other states such as Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, West Bengal, Jharkhand have populations ranging from 60 to 30 people.

By the late 18th century, when the British settled on Great Andaman, the Great Andamanese were divided into 10 main tribes with distinct languages, each counting between 200 and 700 individuals.

South Andaman is less mountainous than the more northerly of the Andaman Islands.

It consists of more than 800 islands, varying in size from very small to hundreds of square kilometres, all lying in the Andaman Sea off the western shore of the Malay Peninsula near its landward ( northern ) end where it joins the rest of Indochina.

It stretches from the Lesser Sunda Islands past Java, around the southern coast of Sumatra on to the Andaman islands, about 300 km off the coasts of Java and Sumatra, and forms the boundary between Indo-Australian Plate and Eurasian plate ( more specific, Sunda Plate ), is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire and a ring of oceanic trenches around the northern edges of the Australian Plate.

It is located 540 km and more than a day ’ s voyage by sea from Port Blair which has the capital city and main port of the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Andaman and Nicobar culture show a mix of the indigenous cultures of the Negroid and the Mongoloid settlers of the island, as well as a more mainstream culture brought down by the descendants of the early settlers in the island from the Indian mainland.

Some of the areas where the NMM gives more focus in today's mission within India include-Indo-Bhutan border, Arunachal Pradesh, Orissa, Assam, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Manipur, Tripura and, West Bengal.

Interview Island ( the largest wildlife sanctuary in the territory ) in Middle Andaman holds a population of feral elephants, which were brought in for forest work by a timber company and released when the company went bankrupt.

Threats to wildlife come from introduced species including rats, dogs, cats and the elephants of Interview Island and North Andaman.

The main mollusk species captured in the Andaman Sea are scallop, blood cockle ( Anadara granosa ) and short-necked clam.

Andaman Islands Day gecko ( Phelsuma andamanense ) is a species of geckos.

Many species are threatened due to habitat destruction, and at least G. cadelliana from South Andaman Island is almost or even completely extinct already.

In the past, several species including the Philippine Serpent Eagle ( S. holospila ), Andaman Serpent Eagle ( S. elgini ) and South Nicobar Serpent Eagle ( S. klossi ) were treated as subspecies of the Crested Serpent Eagle.

The Ripley Guide argue that populations in the Indian subcontinent and the Andaman Islands should be regarded as a separate subspecies, poonensis, from the nominate race which occupies most of the species ' range.

The population found in the Andaman Islands virescens is also considered a separate species Dicaeum virescens ( the Andaman Flowerpecker ) in the newer treatment.

Several species including a new species of frog Nyctibatrachus humayuni and a new species of Nicobar Scops Owl Otus alius have been named after him, and he himself described the Andaman subspecies of Black Baza.

The species formerly included the Andaman Teal Anas albogularis and the Grey Teal, Anas gracilis as subspecies.

The reserve is home to many species of plants and animals, often endemic to the Andaman and Nicobars biogeographic region.

The distinctive taxon from the Andamans has most of the head olive, and is increasingly treated as a separate species, the Andaman Bulbul ( P. fuscoflavescens ).

The exceptions are Phelsuma andamanense, which is endemic to the Andaman Islands in the Bay of Bengal, and Phelsuma dubia, which is also found on the East Coast of mainland Africa, although it is possible that it was introduced there.

Over 400 ' communist sympathisers ' were arrested, of which 153 were deported to the Coco Island in the Andaman Sea.
