The term " consequentialism " was coined by G. E. M. Anscombe in her essay " Modern Moral Philosophy " in 1958, to describe what she saw as the central error of certain moral theories, such as those propounded by Mill and Sidgwick.

There has been a significant revival of virtue ethics in the past half-century, through the work of such philosophers as G. E. M. Anscombe, Philippa Foot, Alasdair Macintyre, and Rosalind Hursthouse.

Anscombe recommends a return to the eudaimonistic ethical theories of the ancients, particularly Aristotle, which ground morality in the interests and well being of human moral agents, and can do so without appealing to any such lawgiver.

G. E. M. Anscombe was particularly critical of the word " ought " for this reason ; understood as " We need such and such, and the only way to get it is this way "— a person may need something immoral, or else find that their noble need requires immoral action.

Furthermore, he would charge philosophers such as Ludwig Wittgenstein ( in his Blue and Brown Books ) and Elizabeth Anscombe ( in her " The First Person " ) for having wrongly concluded that such cases show that the first-person pronoun " I " does not refer to anything.

The work of earlier Catholic theologians on masculinity and femininity, such as Hildegard of Bingen, Edith Stein and G. E. M. Anscombe, has also become recently influential in the development of New Feminism.

Later on, his focus was on contemporary work by Elizabeth Anscombe, Donald Davidson, Saul Kripke, John Rawls, Philippa Foot, Charles Taylor and Richard Rorty.

Other anchors over the years have included Mike Anscombe, Beverly Thomson, John Dawe, Jane Gilbert, Peter Kent, Loretta Sullivan, Bob McAdorey, Thalia Assuras, and Anne-Marie Mediwake.

Anscombe ( 1957 ), Peter Geach ( 1957 ), and Charles Taylor ( 1964 ) all adhere to the former position, namely that intentional idiom is problematic and cannot be integrated with the natural sciences.

They co-authored the 1961 book Three Philosophers, with Anscombe contributing a section on Aristotle and Geach one each on Aquinas and Gottlob Frege.

By the middle of the 20th century Aquinas's thought came into dialogue with the analytical tradition through the work of G. E. M. Anscombe, Peter Geach, and Anthony Kenny.

Anscombe made the topic of intentional action a major topic of analytic philosophy with her 1957 work Intention.

In the midst of widespread ignorance, doctrinal confusion, and moral rebellion, the Newman staked out its position in 1973, hosting an address by Elizabeth Anscombe titled " Contraception, Sin and Natural Law "-a philosophical defence of Pope Paul VI's encyclical on artificial birth control ( Humanae Vitae ).

Elizabeth Anscombe in her article " Modern Moral Philosophy " ( 1958 ) argued that duty based conceptions of morality are conceptually incoherent for they are based on the idea of a " law without a lawgiver ".

This design-based analysis was discussed and developed by Francis J. Anscombe at Rothamsted Experimental Station and by Oscar Kempthorne at Iowa State University.

G. E. M. Anscombe objects to consequentialism on the grounds that it does not provide guidance in what one ought to do because there is no distinction between consequences that are foreseen and those that are intended ( see Principle of double effect ).

( Historical Note: Prior to the coining of the term " consequentialism " by Anscombe in 1958 and the adoption of that term in the literature that followed, " utilitarianism " was the generic term for consequentialism, referring to all theories that promoted maximizing any form of utility, not just those that promoted maximizing happiness.

For instance, G. E. M. Anscombe worries that " ought " has become a " a word of mere mesmeric force ".

We are forced, in our behavior towards others, to adopt empirically successful patterns in toto because we have such a minimal understanding of their essential elements.

The day passed eventfully enough, with a constant stream of visitors, some stopping only to say hello, others getting into serious conversations, such as one Andre Fuchs, a free-lance journalist from Strasbourg who wrote an article for the Nouvelle Alsatian in highly sympathetic terms.

Even though the registers may have an incomplete record of persons present in a particular area or include persons no longer living there, they contain precise information on ages, by date of birth, for some of the persons present ( especially children in relatively stable communities ) and supplementary information ( such as records of marital status ) for many others.

We find, for example, such groupings as the Five Ancient Rulers, the Five Sacred Mountains, the Five Directions ( with Center ), the Five Metals, Five Colors, Five Tastes, Five Odors, Five Musical Notes, Five Bodily Functions, Five Viscera, and many others.

Here Keys and others, such as Dr. A. E. Ahrens of the Rockefeller Institute, took over to demonstrate the chemical difference between vegetable and animal fats -- and even between different varieties of each.

Still, the notion of altruism is modified in such a world-view, since the belief is that such a practice promotes our own happiness: " The more we care for the happiness of others, the greater our own sense of well-being becomes " ( Dalai Lama ).

While Durkheim and others examined the state of modern societies, Mauss and his collaborators ( such as Henri Hubert and Robert Hertz ) drew on ethnography and philology to analyze societies that were not as ' differentiated ' as European nation states.

However this ideal is not normally achieved in practice ; some languages ( such as Spanish and Finnish ) come close to it, while others ( such as English ) deviate from it to a much larger degree.

A number of ancient cities were located here, such as Troy, Assos, Pergamon ( Bergama ), Sardis, Ephesus, Miletus, Halicarnassus ( Bodrum ), Smyrna ( İzmir ), Hierapolis ( Pamukkale ), Magnesia ( Manisa ), Philadelphia ( Alaşehir ), Didyma ( Didim ), Aphrodisias, Kaunos, Knidos, among others.

Some are no more than a widening of a stream valley ; others, such as the Konya Ovasi, are large basins of inland drainage or are the result of limestone erosion.

For some adherents it represents a non-papal Catholicism, for others a form of Protestantism though without a dominant guiding figure such as Luther, Knox, Calvin, Zwingli or Wesley.

These Articles ( though no longer binding ) have had an influence on the ethos of the Communion, an ethos reinforced by their interpretation and expansion by such influential early theologians as Richard Hooker, Lancelot Andrewes, John Cosin, and others.

He was inspired by several others ( including Honoré Blanc ), or at least by the contemporary zeitgeist that was building around such ideas.
