Archibald Campbell, 1st Marquess of Argyll, 8th Earl of Argyll, chief of Clan Campbell, ( March 1607 – 27 May 1661 ) was the de facto head of government in Scotland during most of the conflict known as the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, also known as the British Civil War.

As a descendant of the second Earl of Argyll Lord Cawdor is also in remainder to this peerage and its subsidiary titles, which are held by his kinsman the Duke of Argyll.

The theory of sexual selection was also needed to counter the argument that beauty with no obvious utility, such as exotic birds ' plumage, proved divine design, which had been put strongly by the Duke of Argyll in his book The Reign of Law ( 1868 ).

Archibald Campbell, 7th Earl of Argyll ( c. 1575 – 1638 ), also called " Gillesbuig Grumach ", was a Scottish politician and military leader.

The Calgary Highlanders adopted many dress distinctions of the allied regiment in Scotland in the 1920s and continue to cherish those distinctions into the 21st century, including the red and white diced Glengarry worn by all ranks ( except pipers ), the badger head sporran worn by officers, warrant officers, and senior NCOs, the six-point horsehair sporran worn by junior NCOs ( except pipers ), and the striped necktie of the 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, also worn by officers, warrant officers, senior NCOs, pipers and drummers of The Calgary Highlanders.

His final major role on screen was as John Campbell, 2nd Duke of Argyll ( 1678-1743 ) in the 1995 film Rob Roy, although he also played a prominent role as Fergus in The Princess Stallion in 1997, the year of his death.

Sydney also helped with funds to renovate the Church of St Margaret's in Lochgilphead, in Argyll, where he was parish priest for seventeen years before moving to St Andrew's Church in Rothesay.

He also suggested that the aim of the new club was to emulated the style of play and teamwork that the Argyll and Sutherland football team used that won them the Army Cup which greatly impressed him.
