Because the Army Distinguished Service Medal is principally awarded to general officers, a list of notable recipients would include nearly every general and admiral since 1918, many of whom received multiple awards, as well as a few civilians and sergeants major prominent for their contributions to national defense.

Wendell Fertig, who led Filipino guerrillas behind Japanese lines ; Col. ( later Major General ) John K. Singlaub, who led partisan forces in the Korean War ; and Maj. Maude C. Davison, who led the " Angels of Bataan and Corregidor " during their imprisonment by the Japanese, and Colonel William S. Taylor, Program Manager Multiple Launch Rocket System.

Other recipients included US Army generals Omar Bradley and Matthew Ridgeway, J. C. Penney, Johnny Olsen and Ralph Story.

The four nurses remained the sole women recipients of the Silver Star until: Sergeant Leigh Ann Hester was awarded the Silver Star in 2005 for gallantry during an insurgent ambush on a convoy in Iraq, three nurses who had served in World War I were awarded the Silver Star posthumously in 2007, and Army Specialist Monica Lin Brown was awarded the Silver Star in March 2008 for heroism in the War in Afghanistan.
