In the Alliterative Morte Arthure, a Middle English poem, there is mention of Clarent, a sword of peace meant for knighting and ceremonies as opposed to battle, which is stolen and then used to kill Arthur by Mordred.

His forces caught Arthur by surprise and captured the entire rebel leadership at the battle of Mirebeau.

The Annales date this battle to 516 – 518, and also mention the Battle of Camlann, in which Arthur and Medraut ( Mordred ) were both killed, dated to 537 – 539.

Gildas ' 6th-century polemic De Excidio et Conquestu Britanniae ( On the Ruin and Conquest of Britain ), written within living memory of Mount Badon, mentions the battle but does not mention Arthur.

Certainly, Geoffrey seems to have made use of the list of Arthur's twelve battles against the Saxons found in the 9th-century Historia Brittonum, along with the battle of Camlann from the Annales Cambriae and the idea that Arthur was still alive.

Later medieval writers often associated the battle with the legendary King Arthur ( see also, " Historical basis for King Arthur "); however, no text decisively dated before the 9th-century Historia Britonnum mentions Arthur in relation to the battle.

He mentions the victory at the Battle of Mons Badonicus, a feat attributed to King Arthur in later texts, though Gildas is unclear as to who led the battle.

Brân is praised in the poetry of 12th century bard Cynddelw Brydydd Mawr, in which he is described as " a good commander of the host ; in battle, in hostile territory, in the contest, in stress ", while, in his elegy for Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, Prince of Wales, Bleddyn Fardd compares the overthrow of the prince to the deaths of Llywelyn Fawr, King Arthur and Brân.

Lancelot arrives and rescues the queen, and in the course of the battle Gawain's brothers Gaheris and Gareth are killed, sending Gawain into a rage so great that he pressures Arthur into war with Lancelot.

The reference of Arthur carrying the image of St. Mary on his shoulders during one battle has been explained by later commentators as a mistake for Arthur bearing the image of Mary on his shield, the Welsh word for the two being practically homophones
