In 39 BC, the tribe of the Ubii entered into an agreement with the Roman forces and settled on the left bank of the Rhine.
The Ubii were a Germanic tribe first encountered dwelling on the right bank of the Rhine in the time of Julius Caesar, who formed an alliance with them in 55 BC in order to launch attacks across the river.
The Ubii, on the other hand, and their neighbors, the Tencteri, the former on both sides of the Rhine, originally asked for Caesar's help in their defense against the Suebi, perhaps the beginning of the conflict between the Franks and the Alamanni.
