FLAC is an open format with royalty-free licensing and a reference implementation which is free software.

The bit-stream format was frozen when FLAC entered beta stage with the release of version 0. 5 of the reference implementation on 15 January 2001.

While ZIP may compress a CD-quality audio file by 10 – 20 %, FLAC achieves compression rates of 30 – 50 % for most music, with significantly greater compression for voice recordings.

The reference implementation of FLAC is implemented as the libFLAC core encoder & decoder library, with the main distributable program being the reference implementation of the libFLAC API.

Capsule 1 was released in conjunction with media technology company Aderra Inc. and was made available in multiple formats including a CD / DVD DualDisc, USB Flash Drive, 12 inch vinyl, FLAC download and MP3 download.

Because Monkey's Audio is relatively slow when encoding or decoding files ( what FLAC accomplishes in several seconds can take a minute or more with Monkey's Audio ) FLAC has largely eclipsed it as the preferred format for commercial distribution of lossless audio.

In contrast, FLAC has only open source licenses, so it comes pre-installed with most Linux distributions, is preferred by Linux users, and enjoys broad support in applications.

Some are still dedicated to electronic music and related genres, though this is rapidly changing and the quality of downloads are getting higher with the use of FLAC downloads offering CD quality uncompressed music.

It was initially designed to provide subtitles for Ogg Theora videos, but is also useful for song lyrics with Ogg FLAC or Vorbis, transcripts with Ogg Speex, or any other place where it is useful to combine text with audio or video.

Starting with the summer 2003 tour, the band switched to multiple-capacity jewel cases, and after a brief run in Denver in early 2004, all shows thereafter have been released exclusively online in both MP3 and FLAC formats, with only a few shows per tour being chosen for release on compact disc.

Currently known as " Media Player 10 Mobile ", this edition ( released in October 2004 ) closely resembles the capabilities of the Windows version of WMP 10, including playlist capabilities, a media library, album art, WMA Lossless playback, support for DRM-protected media, video playback at 640x480 with stereo sound, and the same Energy Blue interface aesthetics also seen in recent versions of Windows XP Media Center Edition.

ATRAC Advanced Lossless provides " scalable " compression ; it records a lossy ATRAC3 or ATRAC3plus stream, and supplements it, in the same file, with a stream of correction information that allows the original signal to be reproduced, if desired.

Meridian Lossless Packing, also known as Packed PCM ( PPCM ), is a proprietary lossless compression technique for compressing PCM audio data developed by Meridian Audio, Ltd. MLP is the standard lossless compression method for DVD-Audio content ( often advertised with the Advanced Resolution logo ) and typically provides about 1. 5: 1 compression on most music material.

Apple Lossless data is stored within an MP4 container with the filename extension. m4a.

The Apple Lossless Encoder ( the software for encoding into ALAC files ) was introduced into the Mac OS X Core Audio framework on April 28, 2004 together with the QuickTime 6. 5. 1 update, and thus available in iTunes as of version 4. 5 and above.

" Lossless " means that the output from the decompressor is bit-for-bit identical with the original input to the compressor.

The Blu-ray version was released on February 13, 2007, with a DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5. 1 track and a 1080p HD transfer.
