During this time, Gregory of Cappadocia was installed as the Patriarch of Alexandria, usurping the absent Athanasius.
This council confirmed the decision of the earlier Roman synod, and clearly indicated that the participants saw St Athanasius as the lawful Patriarch of Alexandria.

The 17th-century Jesuit, Athanasius Kircher, thought that the Chinese had also descended from Ham, via Egyptians.

Even during numerous exiles, Athanasius continued to be a vigorous defender of Nicene Christianity against Arianism.
Julius, after expressing an opinion favourable to Athanasius, adroitly invited both parties to lay the case before a synod to be presided over by himself.
