Bede relates the story of Augustine's mission from Rome, and tells how the British clergy refused to assist Augustine in the conversion of the Anglo-Saxons.

Augustine relates that these festivals had a particularly obscene character: a phallus was taken to the fields on a cart, and then back in triumph to town.

Bede relates an anecdote that the British bishops consulted a wise hermit as to how to respond to Augustine when he arrived for the second council.

In this moderation of life we may say that canons regular follow the example of their lawgiver, St. Augustine, of whom St. Possidius, his biographer, relates that his habit, his furniture, his clothes were always decent, neither too showy nor too humble and shabby.

Among them are Secretum (" My Secret Book "), an intensely personal, guilt-ridden imaginary dialogue with Augustine of Hippo ; De Viris Illustribus (" On Famous Men "), a series of moral biographies ; Rerum Memorandarum Libri, an incomplete treatise on the cardinal virtues ; De Otio Religiosorum (" On Religious Leisure ") and De Vita Solitaria (" On the Solitary Life "), which praise the contemplative life ; De Remediis Utriusque Fortunae (" Remedies for Fortune Fair and Foul "), a self-help book which remained popular for hundreds of years ; Itinerarium (" Petrarch's Guide to the Holy Land "); a number of invectives against opponents such as doctors, scholastics, and the French ; the Carmen Bucolicum, a collection of 12 pastoral poems ; and the unfinished epic Africa.

On September 20, 1565, a Spanish force from the nearby Spanish settlement of St. Augustine attacked Fort Caroline, and killed nearly all the French soldiers defending it.

On March 31, 1923, St. Augustine Church burned to the ground.

On his return trip, he bought a relic of St Augustine of Hippo for 100 silver talents and one gold talent.

Augustine of Hippo, Thomas Aquinas or Bossuet in his Discourse On Universal History ( 1679 ) formulated such theodicies, but Leibniz, who coined the term, was the most famous philosopher who created a theodicy.

On the other hand, Pascal and some other Jansenists adopted a radical strategy, alleging that condemning Jansenius was equivalent to condemning the Father of the Church, St. Augustine himself, and adamantly refused to sign the formulary, with or without reserve.

Augustine wrote four letters specifically on Pelagianism, " De peccatorum meritis et remissione libri III " ( Three Books on the Merits and Forgiveness of Sins ) in 412, " De spiritu et litera " ( On the Spirit and the Letter ) and " Definitiones Caelestii " ( Caelestius's Definitions ) in 414, and " De natura et gratia " ( On Nature and Grace ) in 415.

It is perhaps the only extant writing in Pelagius ' own hand, and it was, ironically, thought to be a letter by Jerome for centuries, though Augustine himself references it in his work, On the Grace of Christ.

St Augustine in his City of God writes " God is called omnipotent on account of His doing what He wills " and thus proposes the definition that " Y is omnipotent " means " If Y wishes to do X then Y can and does do X ".

The Commonitorium and the Histories are a response, at least in their origins, to the direct influence that Saint Augustine exercised over Orosius. Although Paulus Orosius ’ s most important book was the Historiae Adversus Paganos, his other two surviving books must also be taken into account: Commonitorium and Liber Apologeticus.

Indeed, whoever will compare what he says in of the heresy which he describes but forbears to name, with Prosper's account of the charges brought against Augustine by certain Semipelagian clergymen of Marseille, will have little doubt that Vincentius and they had the same teacher in view, and were of the same mind with regard to his teaching.

With regard to this account of intellectual knowledge, Malebranche was more or less following Saint Augustine.

The account of Laurence's miraculous scourging by St Peter can be disregarded as a later hagiographical invention of the monastery of St Augustine.

Part II is where Augustine shifts from criticism to positing a coherent account of the relationship between the City of God and an Earthly City subordinated to it.

This distinction, written about as early as Augustine of Hippo and St Jerome, was detailed more explicitly by Thomas Aquinas in his Summa Theologiae, A. After his father's death he returned, with four philosophers, and founded a university at Stamford in Lincolnshire, which flourished until it was suppressed by Saint Augustine of Canterbury on account of heresies which were taught there.

Augustine of Hippo, a Doctor of the Church and Church Father, draws inspiration from John's account of the New Jerusalem to outline this view in his monumental work The City of God.

One says that it was named in honor of the feast day of Saint Monica ( mother of Saint Augustine ), while the other says that it was named by Father Juan Crespí on account of a dripping spring, the Serra Springs, that was reminiscent of the tears that Saint Monica shed over her son's early impiety.

On that account they chiefly come from Hippo and from the home of Augustine, who has given them a Rule, which they still glory to observe.

After hearing his account, the remaining Union forces in the north central Florida area withdrew to the garrisons at Jacksonville and St. Augustine.

Secondly, there was the Augustinian position of an intimate relation between space time and matter ; all three, according to St. Augustine in the Confessions and the City of God, came into being as a unity and ways of speaking that purport to separate them-such as " outside the universe " or " before the beginning of the universe " are, in fact, meaningless.

There is a record dated February 22, 1539 of a christening in the Church of St Augustine, London of a " John White " on that same day ; but there is no proof this is the same person.

Although there are some question marks regarding his biography, such as his exact date of birth, it is known that he was a person of some prestige from a cultural point of view, as he had contact with the greatest figures of his time such as Saint Augustine of Hippo and Saint Jerome.

Though there are several inconsistencies between the records of St Augustine, Irenaeus, and St Jerome, St Jerome is generally credited with assigning the tetramorphs to each of the Evangelists.

By the 3rd century, there is evidence that some early Christians accepted this Jewish Enochic pseudepigraphy and the application of the angelic descent myth to the " sons of God " passage in, Its presence not only in the East but also in the Latin-speaking West is attested by the polemic of Augustine of Hippo ( 354 – 430 ) against the motif of giants born of the union between fallen angels and human women.

In monophonic song, be it chant or a conductus simplex by Perotin, there is no need to vary from the classical standards for declamation that were a rooted tradition at the time, going back to St. Augustine, De Musica.
