Avro also decided to internally fund development of a radial-flow gas turbine engine vehicle, designated PV-704, which proposed no central impeller or exhaust, but rather a large spinning turbo-disc directing all thrust to the outer rim.

Avro Canada proposed several designs to TWA that included Mach 1. 6 double-ogee wing and Mach 1. 2 delta-wing with separate tail and four under-wing engine configurations.

The Avro Blue Steel was a British air-launched, rocket-propelled nuclear stand-off missile, built to arm the V bomber force.

Avro began work proper in 1955, with the assigned Rainbow Code name of " Blue Steel " which it would keep in service.

The ultimate Blue Steel would be a range weapon that could be launched by the supersonic Avro 730 under development.

The postwar Vulcan bombers, originally designed as a nuclear strike aircraft, were used to maintain the British nuclear deterrent, armed with the Avro Blue Steel stand-off nuclear bomb.

National Steel Car had turned out Avro Anson trainers, Handley Page Hampden bombers, Hawker Hurricane fighters and Westland Lysander army cooperation aircraft.

Smye, born in Hamilton, Ontario, had risen through the ranks of the government's departments overseeing wartime aircraft production, to Assistant General Manager of Federal Aircraft Limited, the Crown Corporation managing production of the Avro Anson at the National Steel Car / Victory Aircraft plant.

Initially the major wartime contract to manufacture Avro Lancaster heavy bombers was to go to the National Steel Car Ltd. headquartered in Hamilton, utilizing the Malton, Ontario factory ( near today's Toronto Pearson International Airport ).

National Steel Car was already producing Westland Lysander aircraft and involved as a subcontractor in the manufacture of Hawker Hurricane fighters, Avro Anson trainers and Handley Page Hampden bombers.

The project was delayed by the need to develop the stainless steel fabrication techniques ; this would have been gained in building the Avro 730 but that had been cancelled by then.

While the V bombers no longer held precedence in Britain's nuclear strategic planning, superseded by aircraft such as the SEPECAT Jaguar and Panavia Tornado, which carried smaller tactical nuclear weapons, the Avro Vulcan would be perhaps best remembered for its conventional long range bombing raids during the 1982 Falklands War.

Handley Page and Avro came up with very advanced designs for the bomber competition, which would become the crescent-wing Victor and the delta-wing Vulcan respectively, and the Air Staff decided to award contracts to both companies as insurance against one of the designs being a failure.

Air Chief Marshal Sir John Slessor believed that had the air force been forced to choose among the three British bombers under development in the late 1930s — the Avro Manchester, Short Stirling, and Handley Page Halifax — it would have chosen the wrong one.

Small scale work on what would become the Velvet Glove started in 1948 at CADRE, and by 1951 the plans were advanced enough to put forth the design as armament on the Avro CF-100 Canuck fighter that was then entering service with the RCAF.

The Second World War began with the unit one of the few equipped with modern aircraft, the Vickers Wellington bomber, flying out of RAF Honington ; the Wellington later gave way to the Avro Lancaster, with which the unit would complete its most famous sorties.

These would be available in quantity in early 1942, just as the first of the new " heavies " ( the Avro Lancaster and Handley Page Halifax ) would be arriving in quantity.

After release from the Avro Lancaster B. Mk 1 ( Special ) bomber, the Grand Slam would reach near-supersonic speed, approaching 320 m / s, and penetrate deep underground, with the explosion causing a camouflet ( cavern ) and shifting the ground to undermine a target's foundation.

Canada, since the fall of the Soviet Union, arguably, is also an economic, although not, political, client state of the U. S. Soviet forces would have, in some scenarios, had to cross Canadian territory and fly through Canadian airspace in order to reach the U. S. Russia viewed Canada more favourably and with less belligerence than the U. S. ( particularly after the Avro Arrow and Bomarc missile affairs -- which, in essence, meant that Canada was no longer, independently of the U. S., a military threat to the U. S. S. R. after 1972 ).

Therefore, Mexico acquired some British Avro 504K and Avro 504J airplanes, which later would be made in Mexico with the name Avro Anáhuac.

Hooker also worked on finishing the Olympus, developing later versions that would be used on the Avro Vulcan and Concorde.

Other significant individuals in the program, portrayed in the series, include RCAF pilot Flight Lieutenant Jack Woodman ( Ron White ) who conducted test flights on Avro aircraft but was supplanted by Janusz Żurakowski ( Lubomir Mykytiuk ) for the first few flights ; Jim Chamberlin ( Aidan Devine ) and James Floyd ( Nigel Bennett ) in the design team ; Edward Critchley ( Ian D. Clark ) who would be asked to develop an engine for the Arrow when other models became unavailable.

Later squadrons would use such diverse aircraft as the Handley Page Hampden, the Vickers Wellington, Avro Manchester and finally Avro Lancasters.

Commonly known as Avro Canada, this company started in 1945 as an aircraft plant and became within thirteen years the third-largest company in Canada, one of the largest 100 companies in the world, and directly employing over 50, 000.

* Crawford Gordon Jr. left the Department of Defense Production in 1951 to take over as President and General Manager of A. V. Roe Canada to assist with problems in development and production of the Avro Canada CF-100 Canuck.

In 1954 the Canadian government decided to sell the plant and Avro Canada agreed to purchase it to maintain production of the Orenda and Iroquois engines. The company employed over 400 in the production of precision forgings, blades, jet engine components, close-tolerance forging, and operation of aluminum and magnesium foundries.

On 4 July 1948 a Scandinavian Airlines Douglas DC-6 on a flight from Amsterdam to RAF Northolt collided with a RAF Avro York coming from Malta over Northwood.

On Friday, 24 October 1958, after sustaining a massive electrical systems failure at 30, 000 feet while flying over the Detroit area, an RAF Avro Vulcan four-engine bomber crashed into the 170 block of Ashland on the south side of the city.

In the 1950s and 1960s in Canada, John Carver Meadows Frost at Avro Canada started experimenting with the Coandă effect and noticed that he could produce a ring of airflow by blowing the air down over a convex surface.

Using two spotlights to adjust altitude, a modified Avro Lancaster | Lancaster ( in this case AJ-J ), dropped a backspin | backspun drum-bomb which skipped over torpedo nets protecting the dam.

Avro Canada underwent a major expansion through aircraft development and acquisition of aircraft engine, mining, steel, railway rolling stock, computers, electronics, and other businesses to become, by 1958, Canada's third largest company directly employing over 14, 000 people and providing 45 % of the parent company's revenues.

Calibration of the system was carried out initially using a flight of mostly civilian-flown, impressed Avro Rota autogyros flying over a known landmark, the radar then being calibrated so that the position of a target relative to the ground could be read from the position on the display CRT.

* Avro Canada is formed as a part of the Hawker Siddeley Group and takes over the former Victory Aircraft factory at Malton, Ontario, Canada.

* March 21 – Australia suffers its first airline disaster when the Australian National Airways Avro 618 Ten Southern Cloud disappears in bad weather over the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales, Australia, with the loss of all eight people on board.

* 22 August – An Avro 504 of the Royal Flying Corpss No. 5 Squadron on patrol over Belgium is shot down by German rifle fire, the first British aircraft ever to be destroyed in action.

* August 2 – The British South American Airways Avro Lancastrian Star Dust ( tail number G-AGWH ) disappears over the Andes during a flight from Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Santiago, Chile, with the loss of all 11 people on board.

* February 19 – A British European Airways Douglas Dakota and a Royal Air Force Avro Anson T21 collide in clear weather over Exhall, England.

* January 15 – Two Royal Air Force planes, an Avro Lancaster maritime patrol aircraft of No. 38 Squadron and a Vickers Valetta transport aircraft, collide over the Strait of Sicily in heavy rain and poor visibility and crash.

* February 2 – A Skyways Limited Avro York with 39 people on board disappears over the North Atlantic Ocean during a flight from Lajes Field in the Azores to Gander, Newfoundland.

* March 12-an RAF Avro Lincoln is shot down by Soviet fighters over East Germany

* June 28 – The 22-year operational career of the Avro Anson comes to an end with a six-plane formation fly-past over their base by the Southern Communications Squadron at Bovington, Hampshire, in the United Kingdom.

* October 26 – Snowy Mountains Project worker Tom Sonter accidentally discovers the wreckage of the Australian National Airways Avro 618 Ten Southern Cloud, which had disappeared without trace in bad weather over the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales, Australia, with the loss of all eight people on board on March 21, 1931, in Australias first airline disaster.

The most notable aircraft at the aerodrome was the Avro Vulcan XH558, it having been restored to airworthy condition over a period of eight years at a cost of about GBP6, 000, 000.
