While a student of law at Leipzig he studied music under Johann Sebastian Bach.

In 1715 he became librarian and vice-principal at Weimar, where he became good friends with Johann Sebastian Bach ( Bach later dedicated his Canon a 2 perpetuus BWV 1075 to Gesner ), in 1729 ( having been dismissed as librarian at Weimar ) rector of the gymnasium at Ansbach, and in 1730 rector of the Thomasschule at Leipzig.

Because of the requirements that " new music " be composed as often as possible, Bach seldom chose older poems for his cantatas ; consequently, conductor Craig Smith has suggested that parts of this work may have been composed earlier than the first recorded Leipzig performance.

Picander was the pseudonym of Christian Friedrich Henrici ( January 14, 1700 – May 10, 1764 ), a German poet and librettist for many of the cantatas which Johann Sebastian Bach composed in Leipzig.

Bach met Henrici after moving to Leipzig in 1723, although there is some dispute as to the date of their first collaboration.

In Germany the middle baroque oratorios moved from the early-baroque Historia style Christmas and Resurrection settings of Heinrich Schütz, to the Passions of J. S. Bach, oratorio-passions such as Der Tod Jesu set by Telemann and Carl Heinrich Graun.

It says, “ God is Good ” and never ceases saying it .” ( Bach, 1965, p 29 ) As such, its practices can be traced back to a wide variety of religions.

His recordings include the lute songs of Dowland, operas by Handel, Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, songs and semioperas by Purcell ( such as The Fairy Queen ), traditional English folk songs, works by Thomas Tallis, and the Bach alto repertoire.

Many examples of rounded binary are found among the church sonatas of Vivaldi including his Sonata No. 1 for Cello and Continuo, First Movement, while certain Baroque composers such as Bach and Handel used the form rarely.

Schulze often takes German events as a starting point for his compositions, a notable example being on his 1978 album " X " ( the title signifying it was his tenth album ), subtitled " Six Musical Biographies ", a reference to such notables as Ludwig II of Bavaria, Friedrich Nietzsche, Georg Trakl, and Wilhelm Friedemann Bach.

He also wrote the first biography of Bach ( in 1802 ), one which is of particular value today, as he was still able to correspond directly with Bach's sons Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, and thereby obtained much valuable information that would otherwise have been lost.

Wilhelm Friedemann Bach ( 22 November 1710 – 1 July 1784 ), the second child and eldest son of Johann Sebastian Bach and Maria Barbara Bach, was a German composer and performer.
