Worshipping sessions were held at his home with friends and relatives and the number of believers also steadily increased day by day ; among those who received special spiritual gifts from God during this time was his nephew Barnabas Zhang.

Barnabas Zhang, as well as several other gifted missionaries and evangelists, spread the movement to the Southern areas of China in the 1920s.

Zhang was discontented with the decisions made by the General Assembly ; as a result, when Barnabas was sent by the church to South-East Asia, he then formed his own General Assembly in Hong Kong and became the head Bishop of the church and donning the attire of Cardinal or Pope.

With the conversion of Sergius Paulus, Paul begins to gain prominence over Barnabas from the point where the name " Paul ," his Roman name, is substituted for " Saul " ( 13: 9 ); instead of " Barnabas and Saul " as heretofore ( 11: 30 ; 12: 25 ; 13: 2, 7 ) we now read " Paul and Barnabas " ( 13: 43, 46, 50 ; 14: 20 ; 15: 2, 22, 35 ); only in 14: 14 and 15: 12, 25 does Barnabas again occupy the first place, in the first passage with recollection of 14: 12, in the last two, because Barnabas stood in closer relation to the Jerusalem church than Paul.

A third theory is that Galatians 2: 1-10 describes Paul and Barnabas ' visit to Jerusalem described in Acts 11: 30 and 12: 25.

Epiphanius states that Luke was one of the Seventy ( Panarion 51. 11 ), and John Chrysostom indicates at one point that the " brother " Paul mentions in 2 Corinthians 8: 18 is either Luke or Barnabas.

For each subsequent century, more and more manuscripts survive that contain a portion or all of the books that were held to be part of the New Testament at that time ( for example, the New Testament of the 4th-century Codex Sinaiticus, once a complete Bible, contains the Epistle of Barnabas and the Shepherd of Hermas ), though occasionally these manuscripts contain other works as well ( e. g., Papyrus 72 and the Crosby-Schøyen Codex ).

Contrary to the canonical Christian Gospels, and in accordance with the Islamic view of Jesus, this later " Gospel of Barnabas " states that Jesus was not the son of God, but a prophet and messenger.

" Furthermore, the Gospel of Barnabas states that Jesus escaped crucifixion by being raised alive to heaven, while Judas Iscariot the traitor was crucified in his place.

The Gospel of Barnabas was little known outside academic circles until recent times, when a number of Muslims have taken to publishing it to argue against the orthodox Christian conception of Jesus.

According to the canonical Gospels, Jesus was the " son " ( descendant ) of David ; thus, Hajj Sayed argues that this statement confirms the Gospel of Barnabas ' point.

Here, one version of the Gospel of Barnabas also quotes Jesus as saying that the sacrificed son of Abraham was Ishmael not Isaac, conforming to Islamic belief but disagreeing with Jewish and Christian belief.

It is contended that at this point Barnabas was following Peter and disagreeing with Paul.

However, it should be noted that the Latin Vulgate translation was a work that St. Jerome began in 382 AD, centuries after the death of Barnabas.
