He came under pressure from a charging Rubens Barrichello, and pushed his car too hard and retired after crashing into a wall while trying to both fend off Barrichello and catch up with the cars in front.

On lap 3, at the first corner, de la Rosa passed Salo and soon afterwards Barrichello ( with a damaged car ) passed Herbert to take fifth.
At the pit stops, the top three were well separated and there were no changes in the gaps as well and Barrichello had the damage on his car solved.
However, Ralf was clearly holding up Barrichello who was having a faster car but unable to pass.
Then about 20 laps into the race Montoya crashed into the wall and Barrichello also crashed trying to avoid him, his traction control wasn't working which didn't help, this brought out the safety car briefly while the wreck was cleared.
Barrichello finished second to Montoya as he was five seconds down on the Williams car.
