Fernando Buesa Blanco ( 29 May 1946 – 22 February 2000 ) was a Spanish Basque politician in the Basque Christian Democracy and in the Socialist Party of Euskadi-Euskadiko Ezkerra ( PSE-EE ) branch of the social democratic Spanish Socialist Workers ' Party ( PSOE ).

This is contested by those war veterans that support the Basque Nationalist Party, Spanish Socialist Workers ' Party or Communist Party.

The Basque Country had fallen, the Workers ' Party of Marxist Unification ( POUM ) had been crushed by the Stalinist Communist Party of Spain, and many foreign governments felt it was only a matter of time before the question of who would rule Spain would be settled in favour of the Nationalists.

He is particularly positioned against the ruling Spanish Socialist Workers ' Party, which he argues is understanding with terrorists in Spain and abroad, on the one side and Catalan and Basque nationalism ( and what he sees as their alleged historical revisionism ) on the other side.

Many of its former members integrated into Euskadiko Ezkerra, which later fused with the Partido Socialista de Euskadi ( PSE ), the Basque affiliate of the national Spanish Socialist Workers ' Party.

Later, in 1991, a majority of party affiliates approved a merger with Socialist Party of the Basque Country ( PSE ), the branch of the Spanish Socialist Workers ' Party ( PSOE ) for the Basque Autonomous Community.

In 1987, dissenters from the party formed the rival Eusko Alkartasuna (" Basque Solidarity ").

Eusko Alkartasuna ( Basque Solidarity ) and Batzarre were members of the coalition from 2003 to 2011.

The Basque language name means Basque Solidarity and abbreviated as EA.

Eusko Gudariak ( originally spelt Euzko Gudariak, " Basque Soldiers ") was the republican anthem of the Eusko Gudarostea, the army of the Basque Autonomous Government during the Spanish Civil War.

Euzko Gudarostea ( modern spelling: Eusko Gudarostea, " Basque army ") was the name of the army commanded by the Basque Government during the Spanish civil war.

Its most significant politicians are Patxi Zabaleta ( Aralar ), Maiorga Ramírez ( Eusko Alkartasuna ) and Uxue Barkos, who is a journalist who previously worked for Basque Television and is currently the coalition's only MP in the Spanish Parliament.

It is one of the three parts of a public company owned by the Basque Government, Eusko Trenbideak-Ferrocarriles Vascos.

Eusko Alkartasuna (; ; ; ) is a Basque nationalist political party operating in Spain and France.

After the split of the Basque Nationalist Party ( PNV ) and the creation of Eusko Alkartasuna ( EA ) in 1987, EE established several coalitions with the latter.

However a section of Euskadiko Ezkerra ( including the deputy Koro Garmendia ) disagreed with the PSE merger, and, since the Euskadiko Ezkerra name was retained by the majority of members who approved the merger with the PSE, the remaining faction went on to create a new party, Euskal Ezkerra ( EuE, Basque Left ) which, in turn, merged soon after with Eusko Alkartasuna.

In fact, Eusko Alkartasuna was meant to be founded under the name Eusko Abertzaleak, but the Basque Nationalist Party registered this name first.

Among the parties campaigning for a " No " vote were United Left ( IU ), the Bloque Nacionalista Galego ( BNG, Galician National Block ), Republican Left of Catalonia ( ERC ), Initiative for Catalonia Greens ( ICV ), the social democratic Aragonese Council ( CHA ), the Basque nationalist social democratic Eusko Alkartasuna, and the Trade Unions Confederación Intersindical Galega ( CIG ) and CGT.

Soon after themselves merged with Eusko Alkartasuna, a social-democratic Basque nationalist party, but because of the bad results in the 1993 Spanish general election they broke the coalition and soon afterwards Euskal Ezkerra was dissolved and some of their members continued taking part in other parties.

Euskara Batua was created so that Basque language could be used — and easily understood by all Basque speakers — in formal situations ( education, mass media, literature ), and this is its main use nowadays.

An example is the Aran Valley ( now a Gascon-speaking part of Catalonia ), for ( h ) aran is the Basque word for " valley ".

However, the use of Basque by Spanish nationals in French courts is allowed ( with translation ), as Basque is officially recognized on the other side of the border.

Taken together, in 2006 out of a total population of 2, 589, 600 ( 1, 850, 500 in the Autonomous Community, 230, 200 in the Northern Provinces and 508, 900 in Navarre ), there were 665, 800 who spoke Basque ( aged 16 and above ).
