Functionalists like Monroe Beardsley argue that whether or not a piece counts as art depends on what function it plays in a particular context ; the same Greek vase may play a non-artistic function in one context ( carrying wine ), and an artistic function in another context ( helping us to appreciate the beauty of the human figure ).

Before the 1987 – 88 season, Dalglish signed a number of new players: Peter Beardsley from Newcastle, John Aldridge from Oxford United ( who replaced Ian Rush ); winger John Barnes from Watford ; and Oxford United midfielder Ray Houghton.

For Wimsatt and Beardsley, the words on the page were all that mattered ; importation of meanings from outside the text was considered irrelevant, and potentially distracting.

Wimsatt and Beardsley consider this strategy a fallacy partly because it is impossible to determine the intention of the author — indeed, authors themselves are often unable to determine the “ intention ” of a poem — and partly because a poem, as an act that takes place between a poet and an audience, has an existence outside of both and thus its meaning can not be evaluated simply based on the intentions of or the effect on either the writer or the audience ( see the section of this article entitled “ The Affective Fallacy " for a discussion of the latter ; 5 ).

The Affective fallacy ( identified in the essay of the same name, which Wimsatt co-authored with Monroe Beardsley, as above ) refers to “ confusion between the poem and its results ” ( Verbal Icon 21 ; italics in original ).

Later on in 1971 Johnson scored in a Merseyside derby game for Everton ; he would do the same for Liverpool a decade later, making him, along with Peter Beardsley the only players to have scored for both clubs in the derby.

The latter of these made his reputation as a book illustrator ( this was during the golden age of gift-book illustration in the first quarter of the twentieth century: Clarke's work can be compared to that of Aubrey Beardsley, Kay Nielsen, and Edmund Dulac ).

Two years later another anonymous review ( this time of The Starlit Mire, for which Spare provided ten drawings ) suggests, " When Mr. Spare was first heard of six or seven years ago he was hailed in some quarters as the new Beardsley, and as the work of a young man of seventeen his drawings had a certain amount of vigour and originality.

In The Romantic ' 90s, Richard Le Gallienne, a poet identified with the New Literature of the Decadence, described The Yellow Book as the following: " The Yellow Book was certainly novel, even striking, but except for the drawings and decorations by Beardsley, which, seen thus for the first time, not unnaturally affected most people as at once startling, repellent, and fascinating, it is hard to realize why it should have seemed so shocking.

Interviewed before the appearance of the Yellow Book's first publication, Harland and Beardsley rejected the idea that the function of artwork was merely explanatory: " There is to be no connection whatever the text and illustrations.

Aubrey Beardsley was its first art editor, and he has been credited with the idea of the yellow cover, with its association with French fiction of the period.

Rush was injured during the first half of the game and had to be replaced by Peter Beardsley.

However, it has since been described as Beardsley's first masterpiece, launching what has come to be known as the " Beardsley look ".
