Aubrey Beardsley started to write an erotic treatment of the legend which was never to be finished due to his illness ; the first parts of it were published in The Savoy and later issued in book form by Leonard Smithers with the title Under the Hill.

In The Romantic ' 90s, Richard Le Gallienne, a poet identified with the New Literature of the Decadence, described The Yellow Book as the following: " The Yellow Book was certainly novel, even striking, but except for the drawings and decorations by Beardsley, which, seen thus for the first time, not unnaturally affected most people as at once startling, repellent, and fascinating, it is hard to realize why it should have seemed so shocking.

Interviewed before the appearance of the Yellow Book's first publication, Harland and Beardsley rejected the idea that the function of artwork was merely explanatory: " There is to be no connection whatever the text and illustrations.

Aubrey Beardsley was its first art editor, and he has been credited with the idea of the yellow cover, with its association with French fiction of the period.

Rush was injured during the first half of the game and had to be replaced by Peter Beardsley.

However, it has since been described as Beardsley's first masterpiece, launching what has come to be known as the " Beardsley look ".

Beardsley is the only man to have ever run 13 consecutive personal bests in the marathon, and is in the Guinness Book of World Records for the feat.

The collection of drawings includes over 10, 000 British and 2, 000 old master works, including works by: Dürer, Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, Bernardo Buontalenti, Rembrandt, Antonio Verrio, Paul Sandby, John Russell, Angelica Kauffman, John Flaxman, Hugh Douglas Hamilton, Thomas Rowlandson, William Kilburn, Thomas Girtin, Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, David Wilkie, John Martin, Samuel Palmer, Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, Lord Frederic Leighton, Sir Samuel Luke Fildes and Aubrey Beardsley.

Barnes made his debut for the Reds, along with Beardsley, on 15 August 1987 in the 2 – 1 league win over Arsenal at Highbury.

With the departure of John Aldridge a few weeks into the 1989 – 90 season, Dalglish reverted to a 4 – 4 – 2 formation with Beardsley and Rush as his main strikers, with Beardsley scoring 10 goals in 29 games.

He played in the 1987 League Cup Final but Liverpool lost 2 – 1 to Arsenal and Walsh was dropped afterwards following the arrival of John Aldridge and then Peter Beardsley.

Manager Willie McFaul accepted the offer and Beardsley was on his way to Merseyside after four seasons on Tyneside which had brought a total of a 61 goals ( all in the league ), his transfer completed on 14 July 1987.

Although Rush missed 14 games due to injury, when all three of Liverpool's strikers were fit, Dalglish played with a 4 – 3 – 3 formation that allowed Beardsley, Aldridge and Rush to play alongside each other.

Cox steered Newcastle back to the First Division at the end of the 1983 – 84 season, with players such as Peter Beardsley, Chris Waddle, and ex-England captain Kevin Keegan the fulcrum of the team.

For Wimsatt and Beardsley, intentional criticism becomes subjective criticism, and so ceases to be criticism at all.

Team mate Peter Beardsley has since said Barnes at the end of the 1980s was " The best player I ever played with, bar none.
