The Bhimbetka rock shelters ( Devanagari: भ ी मब े टक ा प ा ष ा ण आश ् रय ) are an archaeological World Heritage site located in Raisen District in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.

Some of the Stone Age rock paintings found among the Bhimbetka rock shelters are approximately 30, 000 years old ( Paleolithic Age ).

Three sites in Madhya Pradesh have been declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO: the Khajuraho Group of Monuments ( 1986 ) including Devi Jagadambi temple, Rewa, Buddhist Monuments at Sanchi ( 1989 ) and the Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka ( 2003 ).

The Bhimbetka shelters exhibit the earliest traces of human life in India and deliver traces of dance from prehistoric times ; a number of analyses suggest that at least some of these shelters were inhabited by hominids like homo erectus more than 100, 000 years ago.

Besides the major cities, Bhedaghat, Bhimbetka, Bhojpur, Maheshwar, Mandu, Orchha, Pachmarhi, Kanha and Ujjain are the other popular tourist destinations.

The name Bhimbetka is associated with Bhima, a hero-deity renowned for his immense strength, from the epic Mahabharata.

As reported in the UNESCO citation declaring the Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka as a World Heritage Site, Bhimbetka was first mentioned in Indian archeological records in 1888 as a Buddhist site, based on information gathered from local adivasis.

Since then more than 700 such shelters have been identified, of which 243 are in the Bhimbetka group and 178 in the Lakha Juar group.

Barkheda has been identified as the source of the raw materials used in some of the monoliths discovered at Bhimbetka.
