Lingard's work influenced Francis P. Kenrick ( 1796-1863 ), Roman Catholic Bishop of Philadelphia, and later Archbishop of Baltimore, who published his own translation of the Four Gospels in 1849.

He received the tonsure, minor orders, and subdiaconate all from Bishop Francis Kenrick.

Bishop Francis Kenrick

On November 10, 1842, Philadelphia's Roman Catholic Bishop, Francis Kenrick, wrote a letter to the Board of Controllers of public schools, asking that Catholic children be allowed to read the Douai version of the Bible, used by Roman Catholics.

Bishop Francis Kenrick quickly issued a statement that instructed all Catholics to avoid violence and confrontations.

In the days afterward, Mayor Scott set up a force to protect Catholic churches, and Bishop Kenrick ordered all churches to be closed the following Sunday to avoid any provocation and possible violence.

After the riots, Bishop Kenrick ended his efforts to influence the public education system and began encouraging the creation of Catholic schools, with 17 being founded by 1860.

During the nineteenth century, Bishop Kenrick encouraged the establishment of Catholic schools.

A formal organization promoting the new cathedral was created on April 28, 1871, and among the members of the St. Louis Cathedral Building Association were Archbishop Kenrick, Bishop Patrick John Ryan, and a variety of local businessmen.

Shortly after his ordination, Kenrick accepted an invitation from Bishop Benedict Joseph Flaget, P. S. S., to join the Diocese of Bardstown, Kentucky, in the United States.

On 25 February 1830, Kenrick was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Titular Bishop of Arath by Pope Pius VIII.

Kenrick assumed full administrative powers from the aged Bishop Conwell, whose tenure had been plagued by a public feud with a schismatic priest named William Hogan.

He successfully petitioned the Holy See to separate Western Pennsylvania into a new diocese, and the Diocese of Pittsburgh was established in 1836 ; Kenrick was initially considered for the new diocese as well as for Coadjutor Bishop of New York, but withdrew his candidacy.

Kenrick succeeded Conwell as the third Bishop of Philadelphia upon the latter's death on 22 April 1842.

He received his episcopal consecration on the following April 14 from Archbishop Kenrick, with Archbishop Patrick Feehan and Bishop Joseph Melcher serving as co-consecrators.

He then took a two-year absence from college basketball, serving as an assistant coach at his former high school, Bishop Kenrick, before assuming an assistant coaching position with the University of Virginia Cavaliers in 1981.

Hogan was appointed as the head of the newly-erected Diocese of Saint Joseph on March 3, 1868, and was consecrated Bishop by Archbishop Peter Richard Kenrick of Saint Louis on September 13, 1868.
