He engaged in conflicts with the Papacy, eventually kidnapping Pope Boniface VIII ( c. 1235 – 1303 ), and securing the appointment of the more sympathetic Frenchman, Bertrand de Goth ( 1264 – 1314 ), as Pope Clement V ; and he boosted the power and wealth of the crown by abolishing the Order of the Temple, seizing its assets in 1307.

In 1913, Boniface was rumored to be engaged to Caroline Delacroix, the wealthy mistress and widow ( though this was disputed ) of Leopold II of Belgium .< ref name = wp1 >

Boniface again set out for what is now Germany, baptized thousands, and dealt with the problems of many other Christians who had fallen out of contact with the regular hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church.

In a stroke of diplomatic genius, Boniface managed to reconcile all the parties while still retaining the confidence of the Emperor.

In the bull Ausculta fili (" Listen, son ", December 1301 ) Boniface VIII appealed to Philip IV to listen modestly to the Vicar of Christ as the spiritual monarch over all earthly kings.

This has advanced the numbering of all subsequent Popes Boniface by one.

For his part, Clement V absolved all the participants in the abduction of Boniface at Anagni.

After Boniface's third trip to Rome, Charles Martel erected four dioceses in Bavaria ( Salzburg, Regensburg, Freising, and Passau ) and gave them Boniface as archbishop and metropolitan over all Germany east of the Rhine.

In all, the content of these early celebrations showed evidence of the continuing question about the meaning of Boniface for Germany, though the importance of Boniface in cities associated with him was without question.

After the abdication of Celestine V, his successor, Boniface VIII, revoked all Celestine's concessions, and they emigrated to Greece, where some of them attacked the legality of the papal action.

In the light of this explicit mention of a jubilee with great remissions of the penalties of sin to be obtained by full confession and purpose of amendment, it seems difficult to reject the statement of Cardinal Giacomo Stefaneschi, the contemporary and counsellor of Pope Boniface VIII, and author of a treatise on the first Jubilee, that the proclamation of the Jubilee owed its origin to the statements of certain aged pilgrims who persuaded Boniface that great indulgences had been granted to all pilgrims in Rome about a hundred years before.
