Mando, pleading her cause, must have said that Dr. Brown was the most distinguished physician in the United States of America, for our man poured out his symptoms and drew a madly waving line indicating the irregularity of his pulse.

It was not until we had returned to the city to live, while I was still at Brown and Sharpe's, that I felt the full impact of evangelical Christianity.

Several efforts were made in this direction, and though not all of them survive to this day, the Brown & Sharpe wire gage system was eventually adopted as the American standard and is still in common use today.

Thus was invented the single thread sewing machine, which Mr. Gibbs in partnership with Mr. Willcox decided to bring to Brown & Sharpe with the proposal that the small company undertake its manufacture.

The new work was a boon to the partnership, not only for its own value but particularly for the stimulation it provided to the imagination of J. R. Brown toward yet further developments for production equipment.

Although Mr. Brown was not himself its inventor ( it was a French idea ), it is typical that his intuition first conceived the importance of mass producing this basic tool for general use.

So it was that when Mr. Brown and Mr. Sharpe first saw the French tool on exhibition in Paris in 1868, they brought a sample with them to the United States and started Brown & Sharpe in yet another field where it retains its leadership to this day.

Along with J. R. Brown's other major developments, the universal grinding machine was profoundly influential in setting the course of Brown & Sharpe for many years to come.

In 1868, however, a truce was called between the companies, and the partnership of Darling, Brown & Sharpe was formed.

Between that year and the buying out of Mr. Darling's interest in 1892, a large portion of the company's precision tool business was carried out under the name of Darling, Brown & Sharpe, and to this day many old precision tools are in use still bearing that famous trademark.

Perhaps the outstanding standard bearer of Mr. Brown's tradition for accuracy was Mr. Oscar J. Beale, whose mechanical genius closely paralleled that of Mr. Brown, and whose particular forte was the development of the exceedingly accurate measuring machinery that enabled Brown & Sharpe to manufacture gages, and therefore its products, with an accuracy exceeding anything then available elsewhere in the world.

Also important on the Brown & Sharpe scene, at the turn of the century, was Mr. Richmond Viall, Works Superintendent of the company from 1876 to 1910.

He was an ardent champion of the Brown & Sharpe Apprentice Program and personal counselor to countless able men who first developed their industrial talents with the company.

During his presidency, the company's physical plant was enormously expanded, and the length and breadth of the Brown & Sharpe machine tool line became the greatest in the world.

Joseph Brown continued in business by himself, quickly rebuilding the establishment which had been lost in the fire and beginning those first steps which were to establish him as a pioneer in raising the standards of accuracy of machine shop practice throughout the world.

* Later in 1919, a British aeroplane piloted by Alcock and Brown made the first non-stop transatlantic flight, from Newfoundland to Ireland.

During 1976, Grant wrote her first song (" Mountain Man "), performed in public for the first time — at Harpeth Hall School — the all-girls school she attended, recorded a demo tape for her parents with church youth-leader Brown Bannister, then later when Bannister was dubbing a copy of the tape, Chris Christian, the owner of the recording studio, heard the demo and called Word Records.

In 1977, she recorded her first album titled Amy Grant, produced by Brown Bannister ( who would also produce her next 11 albums ).

Brown owes its founding to the support of learning among a Baptist Church association but in 1762, the Baptist Minister Morgan Edwards was at first ridiculed for suggesting the founding of a college.

" Nonetheless, Edwards joined several others as an original fellow or trustee for the chartering of the College in the English Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations ( the former name for Brown University ), the first Baptist college in the original thirteen colonies, and now one of the Ivy League universities.

On 6 May 1997, following the 1997 general election which brought a Labour government to power for the first time since 1979, it was announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, that the Bank of England would be granted operational independence over monetary policy.

Brown left the band in 1932 to form the Musical Brownies, the first true Western swing band.

Coolidge's grandmother Sarah Almeda Brewer had two famous first cousins: Arthur Brown, a United States Senator, and Olympia Brown, a women's suffragist.

Paul Brown, the first head coach and namesake of the Browns, who won 4 AAFC and 3 NFL Championships as coach of the Browns, is a Pro Football Hall of Fame member, and is widely regarded as one of football's greatest coaches of all-time.

One of the new ownership group's first acts was to assure Cleveland fans they would give Brown the same kind of leeway.

In 1957's draft, however, Cleveland took fullback Jim Brown out of Syracuse University in the first round.

In his first season, Brown was the NFL's leading rusher with 942 yards in a 12-game regular season and was voted rookie of the year in a United Press poll.

Morse painted portraits of Francis Brown — the college ’ s president — and Judge Woodward ( 1817 ), who was involved in bringing the Dartmouth case before the U. S. Supreme Court.

It is ranked number five in The Washington Post's Hidden Gem's college list, as the best school in Michigan and 52nd best college in the nation by Forbes ( above such prestigious institutions as Brown, the University of California, Berkeley, and Dartmouth College ), and is listed in Loren Pope's Colleges That Change Lives.

* Johnny Mack Brown ( September 1, 1904 – November 14, 1974 ) Born and raised in Dothan Alabama, was an All-American college football player and film actor originally billed as John Mack Brown at the height of his screen career.

Siloam Springs is home to John Brown University, a private, interdenominational, Christian liberal arts college.

The new school was originally envisioned as a place to educate the children of Brown ’ s wealthier donors, as well as a four-year institution designed to complement his other college campus ; however, the university never turned a profit and failed to be accredited as a four-year university.

Brown tried running the Sulphur Springs campus as a high school academy and junior college for women, but, in July 1926, he announced the consolidation of his operations in Siloam Springs.

As part of the transfer agreement, the Brown Foundation also donated of land and six buildings to establish a two year technical college now known as Southern Arkansas University Tech.

Brown grew up in Horatio, and became a prominent lawyer after college.

In fact, admission of minorities goes back at least as far as John Brown Russwurm 1826, Bowdoin's first African-American college graduate, and the third African-American graduate of any American college.

Brown University and the Black Coaches & Administrators co-sponsor the annual Fritz Pollard Award, which is presented to the college or professional coach chosen by the BCA as coach of the year.
