Bull Shoals Lake is Arkansas's largest lake, and is well known as a trout hot spot.

The White River and its tributaries provide habitat for salmon species including Chinook, Pink, Chum, and Coho salmon, as well as Bull, Rainbow, Steelhead, and Cutthroat trout.

The native Puget Sound White River spring Chinook salmon ( and Puyallup River fall Chinook that inhabit the River ), Puget Sound winter Steelhead, and Puget Sound / Coastal Bull trout are listed as Threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

Bull trout can be differentiated from brook trout ( S. fontinalis ) by the absence of distinct spots on the dorsal fin, as well as yellow, orange, or salmon-colored spots on the back as opposed to red spots with blue haloes on the brook trout.

Bull trout lack the deeply forked tail fin of lake trout ( S. namaycush, another char ).

Bull trout may be anadromous in coastal rivers, and individual bull trout have been found to have migrated from one coastal river to another via the ocean.

Bull trout reproduction requires cold water and very low amounts of silt, both of which are negatively impacted by road building and logging.

Bull trout populations are also in danger from hybridization with non-native brook trout.
