Cape Melville is a national park in Queensland, Australia, located 1711 km northwest of Brisbane.

It is part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park east of Cape Melville in Princess Charlotte Bay.

In White-Jacket, Herman Melville wrote, " But if you want the best idea of Cape Horn, get my friend Dana's unmatchable Two Years Before the Mast.

This next passage, describing Dana's first sighting of an iceberg off Cape Horn, “ reminds us of Melville ” and “ other passages seem to anticipate him ”.

There are several outstanding landforms on the peninsula: the large expanses of undisturbed dunefields at the eastern coast around Shelburne Bay and Cape Bedford-Cape Flattery ; the huge piles of black granite boulders at Black Mountain National Park and Cape Melville ; and the limestone karsts around Palmerston in the Cape ’ s far south.

William Whitney had a well known older brother, industrialist Henry Melville Whitney ( 1839 – 1923 ), president of the Metropolitan Steamship Company, founder of the West End Street Railway Company of Boston, and later founder of the Dominion Coal Company and Dominion Iron and Steel Company in Sydney, Nova Scotia on Cape Breton Island.

A memorial stone to " The Pearlers " who were lost to the cyclone, naming 11 Europeans but only citing " over 300 coloured men " for the other seamen, was erected on Cape Melville.

From Cape Don, the western point of the peninsula, to Soldier Point in the east of Melville Island, the distance is 28 km.

Melville includes the Razor-back as a separate " chapter ", but states ( in the voice of Ishmael ) that he has only observed him at a distance off Cape Horn.

At age twelve he started working in a commercial fishing fleet based on Cape Cod and at nineteen he signed on for a three-year voyage on a whaler headed for the South Pacific ; it was the same year ( 1841 ) that Herman Melville shipped out of the same port bound for the same whaling grounds.

The most easterly point of the bay is Cape Melville.

Protected areas around the bay include Cliff Island National Park, Lakefield National Park and Cape Melville National Park.

In 1993 Pearson acted as representative to the traditional owners in the first land claim to the Flinders Island and Cape Melville National Parks, a claim which was successful, although the owners have yet to receive title.

The goddess held a lance whose gilt tip could be seen as a reflection by crews on ships rounding Cape Sounion, and a giant shield on the left side, decorated by Mys with images of the fight between the Centaurs and the Lapiths.

The clipper route, which is the fastest sailing route around the world, follows the ACC around three continental capes-Cape Agulhas ( Africa ), South East Cape ( Australia ) and Cape Horn ( South America ).
