Conifer forests are predominant, chiefly Anatolian black pine ( Pinus nigra ), Cedar of Lebanon ( Cedrus libani ), Taurus fir ( Abies cilicica ), and juniper ( Juniperus foetidissima and J. excelsa ).

Cedar and pine are found in a few localities on the uplands.

In North America shakes are typically made from Western Red Cedar ( Thuja plicata ), while in Scandinavia and Central Europe they are more commonly made from pine ( Pinus sylvestris ).

Pinus gerardiana, known as the Chilgoza Pine ( Urdu: چلغوزا پائن in Persian it means 40 nuts in one cone: چهل و غوزه ), ' noosa ', or ' neoza ', is a pine native to the northwestern Himalaya in eastern Afghanistan, Pakistan, and northwest India, growing at elevations between 1800 – 3350 m. It often occurs in association with Blue Pine ( Pinus wallichiana ) and Deodar Cedar ( Cedrus deodara ).

The surrounding forests consist of Ponderosa pine, Douglas fir, Red Cedar, Poplar, Quaking Aspen, Hemlock, Paper Birch and Western Larch.

Certain hardwoods that are currently used for exterior shutters, specifically Spanish Cedar, Honduran Mahogany and Teak, have grain that actually breathes out moisture making them resistant to rot and decay, and far more durable than a softer wood like pine.

Cedar and pine bedding have wood oils that are dangerous to hedgehogs and can cause lung issues and even sores.

Cedar and pine, even kiln-dried, should not be used as they release aromatic oils that damage the respiratory system and can cause or exacerbate chronic respiratory disease.
