After his re-entry permit was revoked, Chaplin and his growing family decided to settle down in Switzerland.

Chaplin was against the deal, but changed his mind in late 1952 when the US government revoked his re-entry visa while he was in London for the UK premiere of Limelight.

While touring Britain to promote the film Chaplin learned that he had been refused a re-entry visa to the United States because of his alleged communist sympathies, and many American theaters refused to play Limelight.

In September 1898, Hannah Chaplin was committed to Cane Hill mental asylum — she had developed a psychosis seemingly brought on by malnutrition and an infection of syphilis.

Hannah had been booed off stage, and the manager chose Chaplin, who was standing in the wings, to go on as her replacement.
